From the thoroughly prepared ground, if food and drink are obtained and sought, please make more and grant it to me! After he has eaten two or three mouthfuls, he should say: Please partake as you wish! In this regard, if a monk has finished eating and has not relinquished it, and has not fallen from the code of conduct, then he himself should eat two or three mouthfuls and make more. In this regard, if a monk has finished eating and has relinquished it, and has not fallen from the code of conduct, then he should not eat it, but should give it with his hand and say: Please partake as you wish! Thus, he should make more. If he eats it, he will commit a serious offense. There are five reasons why one should not make more, one should say. What are the five? Outside the boundary, in a direction where it cannot be obtained, from behind, from the side, and causing one to fall from the code of conduct. These five reasons are why one should not make more, one should say. There are five reasons why one should make more, one should say. What are the five? Not outside the boundary, in a direction where it can be obtained, not from behind, not from the side, and not causing one to fall from the code of conduct. These five reasons are why one should make more, one should say. Furthermore, there are five reasons why one should not make more, one should say. What are the five? These five reasons are why one should make more, one should say. After one person has made more, many people can eat it, and one should not regret this. Then, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, the respect for learning, and the dedication to the tools of learning, and gave the monks teachings that were in accordance with this, mostly the same as this, and in harmony with this, endowed with the Dharma, and said to the monks:

Monks, therefore, the former (rule) is established, and this is permitted. My disciples who are hearers should recite the basis for training in the Vinaya in this way: Furthermore, any monk who has finished eating food, and without having relinquished it, chews or eats chewable or edible things, commits a downfall. Furthermore, "any monk" refers to the group of six or anyone else like that. "Having finished eating food and having relinquished it" means having completely finished and reached the end. "Without having relinquished it" means without having made leftovers, without having discarded, without having completely abandoned it. "Chewable or edible things" refers to the five chewable things and the five edible things. "Chews or eats" means swallowing into the throat. "Commits a downfall" means burning, cooking, and causing beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, inferior states, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that downfall is not confessed and individually confessed, it obscures virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said, "commits a downfall." So, how does one incur a downfall? If a monk, thinking he has relinquished it, but without having relinquished it, chews or eats chewable or edible things, he incurs a downfall. If a monk doubts whether he has relinquished it and continues to chew or eat chewable or edible things, he incurs a downfall. If a monk, thinking he has not relinquished it but mistakenly thinking he has relinquished it, without having relinquished it, continues to chew or eat chewable or edible things, he incurs a wrong action. If a monk doubts that he has not relinquished it and continues to chew or eat chewable or edible things, he incurs a wrong action. The venerable Ānanda asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Venerable one, how should soup be relinquished? The Buddha replied: Ānanda, that which stands upright when tilted. Venerable one, how should sour congee be relinquished? The Buddha replied: Ānanda, that in which five fingers are visible. Ānanda, there is no relinquishing of what is swallowed into the throat. There is no downfall for the beginner, the madman, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings. The downfall of eating on a single seat, the thirty-fourth, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti.
