How much should one eat to be sufficient? If, when starting a meal, one sees a Khenpo, a Lama, or someone like a Lama, one should not stand up. Having done this, what is the reason that monks are now thin, weak, have thin necks, are emaciated, and have weak bodies? What is the cause? What is the condition? Venerable One, the Blessed One did not forbid eating only what is sufficient. Having taught that when starting a meal, one should not stand up if one sees a Khenpo, a Lama, or someone like a Lama, they abandoned these things as if spitting out phlegm, and even abandoned leaves, beans, vegetables, and dried vegetables, and do not think, "We have abandoned them." Therefore, they become thin, weak, have thin necks, are emaciated, and have weak bodies. Venerable One, what is the reason that monks are now thin, weak, have thin necks, are emaciated, and have weak bodies? That is the cause, and that is the condition. Ananda, therefore, the five things that should be forbidden will not be forbidden, and the five things that should be eaten will be forbidden. Which five things that should be forbidden will not be forbidden? The things that should be forbidden are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. These five things that should be forbidden will not be forbidden. Which five things that should be eaten will be forbidden? The things that should be eaten are rice, hot porridge, meat, oil cakes, and dumplings. These five things that should be eaten will be forbidden. One should prepare the five things that should be forbidden and then eat the five things that should be eaten. Having eaten the five things that should be eaten, one should not prepare the five things that should be forbidden. If a monk eats the five things that should be eaten and then prepares the five things that should be forbidden, he will commit a serious offense. The Blessed One taught that the five things that should be forbidden will not be forbidden, and the five things that should be eaten will be forbidden. They do not eat with hands defiled by these things and bowls stained by these things, saying, "We have abandoned them." Therefore, they become thin, weak, have thin necks, are emaciated, and have weak bodies. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly cultivate, therefore the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, to the venerable Ka

Reproach to Ananda: Ananda, I have said that one will not abandon the five precepts, but will abandon the five foods. What is the reason that the monks are now emaciated, weak, haggard, dry, and physically unwell? What is the cause? What is the condition? Venerable one, the Blessed One has said that one will not abandon the five precepts, but will abandon the five foods, and they do not realize that we have abandoned those hands defiled by them and the bowls covered by them, so they become emaciated, weak, haggard, dry, and physically unwell. Venerable one, what is the reason that the monks are now emaciated, weak, haggard, dry, and physically unwell? That is the cause, that is the condition. Ananda, therefore, it should be said that one abandons through five causes, and it should also be said that one does not abandon through five causes. Which five causes should be said to abandon? Because there is food, because there is the power of food, because there is the making of food, because there is the abandonment of food, and because of falling away from conduct. How because there is food? Because there are the five precepts and the five foods, so thus because there is food. How because there is the power of food? Because there is a woman, a man, or a hermaphrodite, so thus because there is the power of food. How because there is the making of food? Because the five precepts and the five foods are all made, so thus because there is the making of food. How because there is the abandonment of food? Because the five precepts and the five foods are all abandoned, so thus because there is the abandonment of food. How because of falling away from conduct? Having risen from the seat on which one was sitting, so thus because of falling away from conduct, these five causes should be said to abandon. Which five causes should be said not to abandon? Because there is no food, because there is no power of food, because there is no making of food, because there is no abandonment of food, and because there is no falling away from conduct. How because there is no food? Because there are no five precepts and no five foods, so thus because there is no food. How because there is no power of food?
