When the Blessed One said that a monk should not eat what a monk has abandoned, why do monks eat even what has been abandoned, and also eat what has not been abandoned, and reproach, ridicule, and slander? At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, regarding this occurrence, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the group of six monks: Monks, I have said that a monk should not eat what a monk has abandoned, but you eat even what has been abandoned, and also eat what has not been abandoned, is this true? Venerable ones, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying, this is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in conformity with the rules, it is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, in order to truly see the ten benefits, a training rule should be established for the hearers, as before. My hearers should recite the training rule in this way: Furthermore, if any monk, having finished eating, then goes begging or eats, he commits a downfall. Thus, the Blessed One established the training rule for the hearers. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. A householder invited the Buddha and the monastic community of monks to another house for a meal. There were many sick monks and many attendants caring for the sick. After eating themselves, they went begging for alms to fill the stomachs of the sick. But the sick monks could not eat, and the attendants also said that we have abandoned it, so we will not eat. Since there were no monastery residents or novices, they

At that time, a large pile of food was placed in the Delight Garden, and when the crows were eating there, a great crowing sound arose. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, acted knowingly. The Buddha, the Bhagavat, said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, what is the cause of this great crowing sound that has arisen in the Delight Garden? A householder invited a Saṃgha of monks, headed by the Buddha, to another place for a feast. Those many monks' cooks, for their own sake, accepted the alms given by those who were invited, but the monks' cooks did not prepare the food in time, and the monks' attendants did not say, "We have given up." The people of the Delight Garden and the novices were not there either. Therefore, they placed a large pile of food in the Delight Garden, and when the crows were eating there, a great crowing sound arose. Then, the Bhagavat thought: In order to allow the monks to dwell in happiness, and in order to allow the donors to fully enjoy the Dharma of giving, I should allow the remaining food. Thinking thus, he said to the monks: Monks, therefore, it is allowed to eat the remaining food. After the Bhagavat said that it was allowed to eat the remaining food, the monks did not know how to deal with the remaining food. The Bhagavat said: Monks, if anyone who has finished eating and given up, who has completely finished and reached the end, wants to find or eat food, then that monk should wash his hands and then accept it. If a monk has finished eating but has not given up, and has not violated the code of conduct, or if a monk has finished eating and given up, but has not violated the code of conduct, then he should squat down in front of that person and say this: Venerable one, please listen, I, the monk, named so-and-so, want or do not want, have given up and completely finished.
