In Shravasti, there was a householder who took a wife from a family of equal status. He would play with her, rejoice with her, and enjoy happiness together. When he grew old, his relatives were exhausted, his wealth was exhausted, and his enjoyments were exhausted, so he said to his wife, 'Good woman, I am old and unable to accumulate wealth, so I will go forth into homelessness.' Prince's son, do so. He went to Jeta Grove, went to a monk, went to him, prostrated at his feet, and said, 'Venerable one, please allow me to go forth.' The monk said, 'Good sir, I am newly ordained and cannot ordain you.' He said, 'Venerable one, I have come to you for the first time, please entrust me to some monks.' That monk's preceptor was meditating in a secluded monastery, so he took him to the preceptor and said, 'Preceptor, this son of good family wishes to go forth into the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya. Preceptor, out of compassion, please allow him to go forth and grant him full ordination.' The preceptor said, 'Son, the Blessed One has said that it is not permissible for monks to send people to the slaughterhouse, and after they have gone forth and received full ordination, not to instruct and guide them.' He said, 'Preceptor, please just let him go forth and receive full ordination, and I will teach him to read and study.' That monk let him go forth and receive full ordination, and said, 'Good sir, this is your teacher, he will teach you to read and study, and whatever you need, ask him.' When he was teaching him to read and study, the old renunciate, being forgetful, would repeatedly make mistakes. So he would make him sit in front of him and make him confess his faults. The old renunciate thought, 'My teacher always makes me sit in front of him and makes me confess my faults, I will also make him sit in front of me and make him confess his faults.'

What method is there? A householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to another's house for a meal, and the Buddha and the Sangha of monks went. After the Blessed One had eaten the meal, he began to teach the Dharma to that householder. That monk said to the old man, "Old man, come here! Let us go as if we were going to someone's house." The two of them went as if they were going to someone's house, and they said, "Venerables, please eat the meal! We two householders have already eaten." He said, "Please eat the leftovers." He looked at the old man's face and said, "Old man, do you want it?" "I want it." The two of them gave and received, and from there they went to Jeta Grove. That monk said, "Old man, do you filter water? Or go to the monastery and have someone make leftovers for you?" The old man said, "Please have someone make leftovers." That monk began to filter water, and the old man took his bowl and entered the monastery. He had his own (food) made into leftovers, but he did not have his (food) made into leftovers. That monk filtered the water and entered the monastery and said, "Old man, did you have someone make leftovers?" He said, "Please have someone made it." That monk sat down and ate, and the old man said, "Teacher, please open (the bowl) a little." He opened it. The old man said, "Have you broken a vow? Please restore it according to the Dharma." He said, "I have not seen a transgression." The old man said, "You have eaten food that has not been made into leftovers." He said, "Didn't I ask you if you had someone make leftovers?" The old man said, "I said to let myself do it." He said, "Old man, I will not confess the transgression, but in this way, you will become a transgressor, and there will be such a situation." He said this to the monks. Those monks with few desires, why do the monks knowingly seek opportunities when the monk has already eaten and abandoned the food, and in any case, make this monk

Thinking, "I will cause this person to err," and using this as a reason, they scold, saying, "Let this one with life die! Let this one decline!" And they encourage (their decline) with food and drink that is not excessive. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, for this matter, this origin, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the assembly of monks, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked that monk: "Monk, is it true that you knowingly seek the faults of a monk who has finished eating and abandoned (the food), thinking, 'I will cause this monk to err,' and using this as a reason, you scold, saying, 'Let this one with life die! Let this one decline!' And you encourage (their decline) with food and drink that is not excessive?" The monk replied, "Yes, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked, saying, "This is not the behavior of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, it is not something that a renunciant should do." Then, after rebuking in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, therefore, in order to truly see ten benefits, a basis for training should be established for the disciples in the Vinaya," etc., as before. "My disciples should recite the basis for training in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk knowingly seeks the faults of a monk who has finished eating and abandoned (the food), thinking, 'I will cause this monk to err,' and using this as a reason, they scold, saying, 'Let this one with life die! Let this one decline!' And they encourage (their decline) with food and drink that is not excessive, it is a downfall." "Any monk" refers to this Dharma. "Knowingly" means that one has touched it oneself or others have told it. "Monk" refers to this Dharma. "Finished eating and abandoned" refers to being completely fulfilled and ultimate. "Seeking faults" means seeking disputes. "Thinking, 'I will cause this monk'"
