After praising, he gave a Dharma talk to the monks that was in accordance with this, mostly the same as this, and fitting for this, and said to the monks: Monks, therefore, the former is a prohibition, and this is a permission. My hearers should recite the training rules of the Vinaya as follows: A monk who has spent the night in one dwelling place, if not ill, should eat one alms-food. If he eats more than that, he commits a Patayantika offense. "Having spent the night in one dwelling place" means having spent the night in the dwelling place of a heretic. "Monk" means a person of this Dharma. "Not ill" means except for the sick. "Should eat one alms-food" means one mouthful of food. "If he eats more than that" means eating more than that. "Commits a Patayantika offense" means burning, cooking, and falling into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if that Patayantika offense is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is said, "Commits a Patayantika offense." So, how does one commit a Patayantika offense? If one stays there and eats there, staying there incurs a Dukkata offense, and eating there incurs a Patayantika offense. If one stays there and eats elsewhere, staying there incurs a Dukkata offense, and eating elsewhere incurs no Patayantika offense. If one stays elsewhere and eats there, staying elsewhere incurs no Patayantika offense, and eating there incurs a Patayantika offense. If one stays elsewhere and eats elsewhere, neither incurs a Patayantika offense. If the Sangha, relatives, or patrons say, "Please stay here," there is no Patayantika offense. There is no Patayantika offense for a beginner, a madman, one whose mind is disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. The thirty-second Patayantika offense of eating in one dwelling place is complete. Vinaya-vibhanga, fifty-second fascicle. The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Anathapindika's Jeta Grove in Shravasti. When the like-minded ones from the northern route arrived in Shravasti, the group of six monks heard about it and said: Ananda, Nanda, we have heard that the like-minded ones from the northern route have arrived in Shravasti.

Having heard this, if they could do something a little, they might still go. If they say, "Give us some food," they should reply, "Enough to be full." If they say, "Give us some clothes," they should say, "Take them." Having said this, they left, saying, "Good people, please sit down, and I will teach you the Dharma." They paid homage to their feet and sat down in front to listen to the Dharma. They taught the Dharma to those people, and those people said, "Venerable ones, please accept alms here." The group of six monks said, "Good people, enough to be full." The group of six monks came again and again to teach the Dharma, and those like-minded people also said again and again, "Venerable ones, please accept alms here." The group of six monks also said again and again, "Good people, enough to be full." At another time, those like-minded people said, "Wise ones, there is no grass for the cattle here. Let us go to another valley for a while to graze the cattle, and when the goods have been traded and we are about to leave, we will go to Shravasti." Having said this, they drove the cattle to a valley to graze. The group of six monks also got up early the next morning to teach the Dharma, and when they found that those like-minded people were not there, they were depressed and sat down. At that time, a person came there and said, "Venerable ones, why are you sitting here depressed?" The group of six monks said, "Good people, some of our like-minded friends live in this area, but they are not paying attention to us at all." That person said, "Venerable ones, they are not always here. It is like this, they do not have the money to sell the cattle, so they are grazing the cattle in a valley, and they will come back here later. May you be healthy." The group of six monks came to that valley. When they saw those like-minded people from afar, they spoke these verses: Do not go to the rugged mountain, even if you go, do not stay long. The rugged mountains are like, living on the mountain is also like that. Living on the mountain is initially like, refining gold, you must carefully discern things that are harmful to people.
