Thinking that those people could be subdued. He observed that the Venerable Śāriputra was able to subdue them. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Śāriputra: Śāriputra, go and see at a certain mountain rock there, a certain householder and his retinue, and the crowd of people living on the mountain rock. Having heard from the Blessed One, "Venerable, as you say," the Venerable Śāriputra went with five hundred attendants to that mountain rock. He gradually traveled and arrived at that mountain rock, and entered the dwelling of that householder. That householder heard that the monk Śāriputra had come with five hundred attendants to this mountain rock and had entered his dwelling. Having heard this, he went to where the Venerable Śāriputra was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Venerable Śāriputra, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Venerable Śāriputra correctly taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted that householder with words related to the Dharma. In many ways, he correctly taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted with words related to the Dharma, and then remained silent. Then, that householder rose from his seat, placed his upper garment on one shoulder, and with his palms joined together in the direction of the Venerable Śāriputra, said these words to the Venerable Śāriputra: Venerable Śāriputra, may I offer a meal tomorrow to the Sangha of monks and you together? The Venerable Śāriputra remained silent, acquiescing to that householder. Then, that householder, realizing that the Venerable Śāriputra had acquiesced in silence, bowed his head at the feet of the Venerable Śāriputra, and departed from the presence of the Venerable Śāriputra. Then, that householder prepared clean and delicious food and drink that night, and the next morning he got up early, laid out seats, prepared water, and then sent someone to invite the Venerable Śāriputra: Venerable Śāriputra, if the Venerable wishes, it is time for the meal.

The son of the mountain urged, "Now is the time, please consider it." Then, the Venerable Shariputra, in the morning, put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and surrounded by the community of monks, with the monastic community leading the way, went to the house of that householder. Having arrived, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared in front of the monastic community. Then, that householder, seeing that the Venerable Shariputra and the monastic community were sitting comfortably, satisfied and nourished them with clean and delicious food from his own hands. In various ways, having satisfied and nourished them with clean and delicious food from his own hands, the Venerable Shariputra finished eating, washed his hands, and seeing that the bowl had been put down, took a very low seat and sat in front of the Venerable Shariputra in order to listen to the Dharma. Having sat down, that householder said this to the Venerable Shariputra: "Venerable Shariputra, please teach the Dharma." For the sake of that householder, you should have seats spread out in a wide open space, and have it proclaimed to the great assembly of people at that mountain rock: "Tomorrow, the noble Shariputra will teach the Dharma. Whoever among you wishes to hear the Dharma, come!" The Venerable Shariputra, having expressed his appreciation, rose from his seat and departed. That householder was a famous leader in that mountain rock, so he had seats spread out in a wide open space and proclaimed to the great assembly of people at that mountain rock: "Tomorrow, the noble Shariputra will teach the Dharma. Whoever among you wishes to hear the Dharma, come! Whoever among you has not seen the truth there, must wander in samsara for a long time!" Then, the Venerable Shariputra went in that direction and sat down on the prepared seat in front of the monastic community. Countless beings, some out of curiosity, and some driven by the roots of past virtue, also sat down. The Venerable Shariputra, knowing the thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature of that assembly, like this

Ma Budha and his retinue, along with two million kotis of beings, saw the truth, some attained the fruit of stream-entry, some attained the fruit of once-returning, some attained the fruit of non-returning, some renounced and abandoned all defilements, attaining the state of Arhat. Some generated the mind of a Hearer's Bodhi, some generated the mind of a Pratyekabuddha's Bodhi, some generated the mind of Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi, and in this way, the Dharma was taught. Most of that retinue inclined towards the Buddha, turned towards the Dharma, and turned towards the Sangha. The venerable Shariputra taught the Dharma for so long that the umbrella wore out, and the wind turned it behind him, so the householder said: Venerable Shariputra, for this reason, please stay in my dwelling, and I will provide you with what is needed for alms. Shariputra said: Householder, it is precisely through you that the Bhagavan establishes the basis of training for the Hearers in the discipline, I will go. Then, the venerable Shariputra, as usual, divided the food, and from that rock, he traveled alone to Shravasti, gradually traveling, and finally arrived in Shravasti. The monks asked those who lived with the venerable Shariputra and the attendants: Are the venerable ones living comfortably? Are the venerable ones somewhat living comfortably? Are they somewhat living painfully? What is living comfortably? The preceptor did so many things to tame, that is living comfortably. What is living painfully? When the preceptor was sick, the umbrella wore out, and he left from that rock, that is living painfully. When they said this, the monks reported it to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: Therefore, except when sick, monks are allowed to carry knee protectors. Then, the Bhagavan, for those who want to learn, respect learning, and need the requisites for learning
