The group of six severely beat and thrashed those naked ascetics with sticks, fists, stones, and whips, driving them out of their dwellings. Brahmins and householders saw this and said: "Look, wise ones, look! The battle of the ascetics will bring rain!" The group of six said: "Dear ones, the place of enjoyment is burned, and the embers are extinguished, let us go to Śrāvastī." So they went to Śrāvastī. A Lokāyata opponent named Cārka came to Śrāvastī from the south. Desiring to debate, he went to the venerable Kaundinya and said: "Venerable, I have learned a little from my teacher, and therefore I wish to engage in debate with you." The venerable Kaundinya said: "Brahmin, I do not wish to debate with you, go away." Then that Lokāyata went to the venerable Aśvajit, Bhadrika, Vāṣpa, Mahānāman, Yaśas, Gavāmpati, Vimala, Gavāmpati, and Subāhu, and said to them: "Venerable, I have learned a little from my teacher, and therefore I wish to engage in debate with you." They said: "Brahmin, we do not wish to debate with you, go away." Then that Lokāyata went to the venerable Śāriputra, and having arrived, he said to the venerable Śāriputra: "Venerable, I have learned a little from my teacher, and therefore I wish to engage in debate with you." The venerable Śāriputra thought: "Does this person have any roots of virtue?" He saw that he did. "On whom does he depend?" He saw that he depended on himself. "Can he be subdued by debate?" He saw that he could. "How long will it take to subdue him?" He saw that he would be subdued after seven days. Then the venerable Śāriputra said: "Bra

"Ma ze, come here, do it like this." Thus, on the first day, he gave away the remaining food. The next day, he also gave away the remaining food during the day. Likewise, he gave away the remaining food until the seventh day. In all, a heretical debater named Charka came from the south. He and the venerable Shariputra debated until the seventh day. One could not defeat him, nor could two. When this sound spread, hundreds of thousands of beings, some out of curiosity and some urged by previous roots of virtue, gathered there. The venerable Shariputra thought, "Have those who are to be tamed by my alms gathered?" Seeing that they had gathered, the venerable Shariputra defeated that heretic and subdued him, giving away all the remaining food, and subdued the wandering heretic Charka. He also developed faith and said, "Venerable Shariputra, if I could go forth and receive full ordination in the Dharma and Vinaya well-spoken by the Blessed One, and obtain the status of a Bhikshu, I would practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One." The venerable Shariputra allowed him to go forth and receive full ordination. Having gone forth in that way, he dwelt alone in solitude, diligent, zealous, and self-controlled. For what reason does a son of good family shave his hair and beard, don the saffron robes, and go forth from home to homelessness out of faith alone? For the sake of that unsurpassed end of the pure conduct, he realized and attained it in this very life through his own direct knowledge. He understood: "Birth is exhausted, the pure conduct has been fulfilled, what needed to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this life." He became an Arhat, free from desire for the three realms, with a mind that regards clods and gold as equal, like the sky and the palm of the hand, and like sandalwood placed [on a pyre], he broke through the shell of ignorance with wisdom, attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, turned his back on existence, the gains of desire, and respect, the faculties and near

Worshipped by the gods with power, to be remembered, to be openly praised. Then, that assembly was amazed that the venerable Shariputra was able to defeat such an opponent. Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing the thoughts, habits, dispositions, and nature of that assembly, in this way, countless beings saw the truth, some attained the fruit of stream-entry, some attained the fruit of once-returning, some attained the fruit of non-returning, some renounced and abandoned all afflictions, and attained the fruit of Arhatship. In this way, the Dharma was taught, and most of that assembly inclined towards the Buddha, turned towards the Dharma, and turned towards the Sangha. The venerable Shariputra defeated the Lokayata Carka in the morning, and in the afternoon, the group of six monks arrived in Shravasti. The monks said to them: Venerable ones, welcome! Welcome! Where did you come from? The venerable Shariputra defeated the Lokayata opponent from the south, a wandering heretic Brahmin named Carka, who wanted to debate and came for the instruments of debate, and thus completely triumphed in battle. The group of six monks said: Venerable ones, in this way, the venerable Shariputra, as the second eloquent one, the Dharma general, the wheel-turner of Dharma, defeating one opponent, what is so amazing about that? Even if the venerable Shariputra had not defeated him, with the Bhagavan sitting behind, that would not be surprising. We six people defeated sixty naked heretics, that is amazing! With the place of wisdom, with the wisdom of the stick, teaching the Dharma to the body. Is he alive or dead? At that time, if he is alive, is he still alive now? If he is dead, it cannot be recovered. Those monks with few desires, why do the monks rebuke, slander, and speak harshly because they are proud of the limb with which they should be ashamed? At that time, the monks reported to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan
