This arose from that, with this as the beginning, at this time he performed the gathering of the Sangha of monks, and so forth, as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, knowingly cultivated and so forth, also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavat, rebuked the group of six, saying: Monks, is it true that you have done such an unseemly thing? Venerable one, it is. The Buddha, the Bhagavat, rebuked, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not suitable, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not something to be done by one who has gone forth. Then, after rebuking in various ways, the Bhagavat addressed the monks: Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, a basis for training should be established for the hearers in the Vinaya, and so forth, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya in this way: A monk who has spent the night in one dwelling place should eat one alms food. If he eats more than that, he commits a downfall. Thus the Bhagavat established the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya. The Buddha, the Bhagavat, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Anathapindika-arama. Then that householder, carrying goods, went to that rocky mountain and entered that householder's shop. That householder began to distribute the goods to the naked ascetics. He did not send anyone to that householder, but gave alms to friends and places of alms. And he called out, "Come here!" That householder was a faithful person, and he thought: These must be the hearers of the Bhagavat, I should go and see. When he arrived there, he saw that those naked ascetics were shameless people. Because it is painful to speak unpleasant words to their face, he stayed there without saying anything. After they had eaten and left, that householder said to them: Friends, is the field good and the seed good? That householder said: Friends, the seed is good, but the field is naked ascetics, who are shameless, have wrong views, live in deserted places, have salt as their gate, and are extremely sinful.

The land is all flesh. The householder said: Friend, is there any other field that is better? He said: Yes, the Shravakas of the Blessed One. The householder said: Friend, don't even mention the names of those people. He said: Have they come here? They have come. Who are they? The group of six monks. What did they do for a while? Like this and that. He said: Friend, you have taken wish-fulfilling jewels from the great ocean. The householder said: Are there any other good Shravakas of the Blessed One? Yes, if you were to see the venerable Shariputra, and the great Maudgalyayana, and Namboat, and Avanti and so on, other great Shravakas of the Blessed One, you would have such a place where you would have great faith. The householder said: If they were to come here, I would provide them with the necessities of alms. That householder thought: Now I should go and ask the Blessed One, so that householder exchanged goods and took the price, and went to where the Blessed One was in Shravasti, and finally went to Shravasti. Then that householder hid the goods in the shop, and went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat on one side. After sitting on one side, that householder said this to the Blessed One: Venerable, in such and such a mountain rock, there is such and such a householder, who provides lodging for the monks and Brahmins of the four directions, and whoever lives there, he provides them with the necessities of alms, and if he wants to see the Shravakas of the Blessed One, it would be good if the Blessed One, out of compassion for him, would send some monks there. The Blessed One did not say anything to that householder, and gave his permission. Then that householder knew that the Blessed One had given his permission by not speaking, so he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and left from the presence of the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One (considered) which monk could (go) with that householder with his entourage, and the beings living in that mountain rock.
