Praise of alms-begging, and praise of wiping with a hand towel, and indeed praise of wiping with a hand towel. Kashyapa, you should train in this way. This is something that happens temporarily, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, does not temporarily establish the basis of training for the Shravakas for the sake of taming. Vinaya-vibhanga, Fiftieth fascicle. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. A time of poverty arose, and Brahmins and faithful householders prepared alms for the elder monks. The group of six monks, in the morning, having put on their lower garments, taking their bowls and Dharma robes, went to Shravasti for alms, and they went to the group of twelve monks. Those monks said: "Venerables, please be seated and partake of the meal. Who will give alms?" Those monks said: "We will give." "Who will give alms tomorrow?" "We will give." The group of six monks said: "Sisters, we cannot live on just that. If you could arrange for those Brahmins and faithful householders who prepare alms for the elder monks to prepare them for us, then we would be able to live." The nun Sthulananda said: "Venerables, is it permissible to do that?" The group of six monks said: "Should we starve to death? It is good, it is permissible. It is very good, it is permissible." Where was it forbidden? Who forbade it? Then, the bhikshuni Sthulananda, in the morning, having put on her lower garments, taking her bowl and Dharma robes, went to Shravasti for alms. She went to a certain house where the alms of the venerable Kaundinya were being prepared, and she said: "Whose alms have you prepared?" Those people said: "Of the venerable Kaundinya." Sthulananda said: "If you were to prepare alms for one who has gone forth from the Shakya clan, who possesses the three pitakas, who proclaims the Dharma, who has the fearlessness of reason and liberation, then you would gain greater merit." Those people said: "Venerable Mother, one who has gone forth from the Shakya clan, who possesses the three pitakas and

Endowed one, who is the one who proclaims the Dharma and has the fearlessness of reason and liberation? Poma said happily: The noble Ananda, who renounced from the Shakya clan, possesses the three baskets, proclaims the Dharma, and has the fearlessness of reason and liberation. They said: Let it be so. They had the alms food that was offered to the noble Kaundinya prepared for Ananda. Likewise, all the alms food that was offered to the elder monks was prepared for the group of six monks. The group of six monks, in the morning, having put on their lower garments, carrying their bowls and Dharma robes, went to Shravasti for alms. The monks, seeing them coming with alms food that they claimed was from bowl-vessels, said: Alas, the group of six monks claim to be bowl-vessels. The group of six monks said: May the sisters who have prepared alms food for us be free from illness. The monks said: Knowing that it was prepared by nuns, is it permissible for you to eat the food? The group of six monks said: It may be permissible, it may not be permissible, but should we starve to death? The few monks rebuked, saying: Why do the monks eat the food prepared by the nuns? When they were slandering, scolding, and criticizing, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this basis of discussion, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly act, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the group of six monks: Monks, is it true that you knowingly eat food prepared by nuns? Venerable ones, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks

It was said: Monks, therefore, having fully observed the ten benefits, the Vinaya should be established as the basis of learning for the Shravakas, and so on, as before. My Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya as follows: Furthermore, if any monk knowingly eats food prepared by a Bhikshuni, he commits a Patayantika offense. The Blessed One thus established the basis of learning in the Vinaya for the Shravakas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was a householder who engaged in two kinds of work, namely trade and agriculture. He plowed the field of the monastery, sowed seeds, built a hut near the field, and took goods to another country. A mendicant, wandering through the countryside, went to Shravasti, and while wandering there, saw a hut near the field and thought: This place is secluded, I should stay here. So he began to live there, begging in Shravasti, and settled there. There were no human tracks there, and no wild animals or birds came, and the gods also regularly sent down rain, making the field very fertile. That householder also successfully completed his business and returned auspiciously and peacefully. Then, the householder hid his belongings, bathed, and was eating when his wife said: Master, you sowed seeds in the monastery's field and went to another country, please see if you can recover at least the seed money. The householder went there and saw that the crops in the field were very abundant, and thought: I have not weeded here, nor have I left any guards, what is the reason that this field has become so abundant with crops? So he wandered there and saw human footprints, and followed the footprints to the hut, and saw a mendicant monk sitting in the lotus position, and thought: This field has become so abundant with crops because of his power. So he said: Venerable one, hut
