The term "food" refers to the five hard foods and the five soft foods. The term "to eat" means to swallow into the throat. The term "except for those previously invited to the house" means excluding those previously invited to the house as guests. The term "offense of downfall" means burning sentient beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil realms, bad paths, and places of downfall, tormenting them, causing them to fall. Furthermore, if this offense of downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous Dharmas, therefore it is said to be an offense of downfall. So, how does one fall? For example, when many bhikshus are invited to another's house as guests, a bhikshuni comes and asks the guests: Which bhikshus did you invite? So-and-so and so-and-so, etc. What kind of food do you offer? We offer triple food. That is not allowed, because those bhikshus are stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats, and you should offer them pure flour. What kind of ghee do you offer? We offer sheep's ghee. That is not allowed, because those bhikshus are stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats, and you should offer them cow's ghee. What kind of salt do you offer? We offer altered salt. That is not allowed, because those bhikshus are stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats, and you should offer them rock salt, sea salt, and sea salt.
