Having understood this, he addressed the monks, "Monks, I am now old and advanced in years, and it would be tiring for me to teach the four assemblies: monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. Therefore, monks, from now on, let the elder monks take turns teaching the nuns. At that time, the elder monks would take turns teaching the nuns. However, when the turn came for the venerable Nanda, he was unable to teach the nuns. Then, the great Prajāpatī Gautami, along with five hundred nuns, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, she bowed her head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the Blessed One taught, exhorted, encouraged, and gladdened the great Prajāpatī Gautami with a Dhamma talk. In many ways, he taught, exhorted, encouraged, and gladdened her with a Dhamma talk, and then urged Gautami, 'Now is your time, go.' Then, the great Prajāpatī Gautami, greatly pleased and rejoicing in the Blessed One's words, bowed her head at the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, not long after the great Prajāpatī Gautami had left, having understood this, addressed the venerable Ananda, 'Ananda, which elder monks are taking turns teaching the nuns?' 'Venerable sir, most of the elder monks are taking turns teaching the nuns, but the venerable Nanda, even when it is his turn, is not able to teach the nuns.' At that time, the venerable Nanda was sitting in that very assembly and was in harmony. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Nanda, 'Nanda, teach the nuns! Nanda, teach the nuns!'

Then teach! Gagyé, you should instruct the nuns with words that are in accordance with the Dharma. Why is that? Gagyé, to the nuns, I or you can instruct; to the nuns, I or you can subsequently teach; to the nuns, I or you can speak words that are in accordance with the Dharma. The venerable Gagyé did not speak, therefore he accepted the Blessed One's teaching. Then, the venerable Gagyé was overjoyed and rejoiced at the words spoken by the Blessed One, bowed his head to the Blessed One's two feet, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Gagyé, after that night had passed, the next morning put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robe, and went to Shravasti for alms. Then, after going for alms in Shravasti, after doing the work of eating, returning from the afternoon alms, he put down his bowl and Dharma robe, washed his two feet, and entered the monastery in order to enter into meditation. Then, the venerable Gagyé, after rising from the afternoon meditation, took his sitting mat and went to the summer retreat of the monks and nuns who followed the heretics, which was the King's Jeta Grove. Those nuns saw the venerable Gagyé from afar. Having seen him, they also prepared a seat for the venerable Gagyé, and also said this: Venerable Gagyé, please come! Venerable Gagyé, your arrival is good! Venerable Gagyé, please sit on the seat that has been prepared. The venerable Gagyé sat on the seat that had been prepared. Then, those nuns bowed to the two feet of the venerable Gagyé, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Gagyé said this to the nuns: Sisters, please ask thoroughly, and I will tell you words that are in accordance with the Dharma.
