He dwells. Is it permissible for you to sit on a seat when you are alone with a woman's place, secluded and sheltered? It may or may not be permissible, but I dwell in that way. Almsman, you have eaten my alms in this way today, and if you cannot bear it, rely on me to establish the basis of learning. Should I forget it? When he said this, he spoke to the monks. Some monks with few desires rebuked, "Why do monks sit on a seat when they are alone with a woman's place, secluded and sheltered?" They condemned and reproached. Then, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the venerable Charga, saying, "Charga, is it true that you sit on a seat when you are alone with a woman's place, secluded and sheltered?" Venerable, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked, saying, "This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do." Then, after the Blessed One rebuked in various ways, he said to the monks, "Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, the basis of learning should be established for the hearers in the Vinaya." Etc., as before. My hearers should recite the basis of learning on discipline in this way: "If any monk sits on a seat when he is alone with a woman's place, secluded and sheltered, he commits an offense of downfall." Any monk, refers to Charga, or anyone else like him. A woman's place, refers to a woman, or a young woman, who is able to believe in the Dharma arising from practicing impure conduct.

And ngo. The so-called "secluded place" refers to a place where there are no women, men, or hermaphrodites. The so-called "protected" means being protected by five things, namely, being protected by walls, protected by fog, protected by curtains, protected by dense objects, and protected by signs. The so-called "on the seat" means on the base. The so-called "sitting" means placing the buttocks within a fathom (about two meters). The so-called "offense" means burning sentient beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil realms, evil paths, and places of falling. It is a place of torment and falling. Furthermore, if the offense is not confessed, and not confessed one by one, it will obscure the virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be an "offense." So, how does one commit an offense? If a bhikkhu is slightly with a woman, alone in a secluded and protected place sitting on a seat, then everything becomes an offense. If one lives in a gatehouse, or enters a medicine mill, or lives with the door not closed, or others enter and exit, then there is no offense. For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those oppressed by feelings, there is no offense. The offense of sitting alone, the twenty-eighth, is complete. The Buddha Bhagavan resided in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti (a Buddhist center in the 6th century BC, now in Uttar Pradesh). When Sbedma was ordained and served as a steward, the bhikshunis put on their skirts in the morning, took their bowls and robes, and went to beg for alms. Sbedma was cleaning the temple. The Venerable Acharya also put on his skirt in the morning, took his bowl and robe, and entered Shravasti to beg for alms. While begging for alms in Shravasti, he went to the summer residence of the bhikshunis. Sbedma was cleaning in the summer residence of the bhikshunis, and she saw the Venerable Acharya from afar. Seeing him, she said, "The Venerable Acharya has come, very good, very good." Having said that, she put the broom aside, prostrated at the feet of the Venerable Acharya, and stood before him. Acharya preached the Dharma to her accordingly.

Relating how they used to laugh and play in the past, and how they rejoiced and made merry, she began to reminisce, saying, "Spedma, do you remember? We used to arrange things like this and that in such and such a garden, meeting place, and abode of the gods, and we ate and drank like this and that, and we arranged our dwelling like this and that, and we lit butter lamps like this and that, and we two did such and such things there?" Spedma said, "I remember." Then, an old, sick bhikshuni thought, "Why are these two telling each other things even from the time they were engaged?" Spedma said, "Venerable one, please leave now." The bhikshunis were about to leave, but the summer residence had not been swept, and the bhikshunis would be blamed for it, so she took the broom and left. Spedma began to sweep the temple, and the other bhikshunis also came, and they said, "Spedma, what have you done that this summer residence is just as it was, complete with sweeping?" Spedma said, "Sisters, since you went for alms, I have not sat on the ground." The old, sick bhikshuni heard this and said to the bhikshunis, "It is true that Spedma has not sat down since you went for alms, because this venerable Charka came, and she has been standing with her, and even from the time they were engaged, they have been telling each other things." The bhikshunis asked Spedma, "Spedma, is it true that you did that?" Sisters, it is true. The bhikshunis rebuked, saying, "Why do bhikshus and bhikshunis stand alone together in a secluded and sheltered place?" They were reproaching, slandering, and mocking. The bhikshunis told the bhikshus about this. Some bhikshus with few desires also rebuked, saying, "Why do bhikshus stand alone with bhikshunis in a secluded and sheltered place?" They were reproaching, slandering, and mocking. The bhikshus reported this to the Blessed One.
