The basis for training in discipline for the monks should be declared as follows: Furthermore, if any monk, with a nun sharing a common purpose, embraces and boards the same boat, going upstream or downstream, it is a downfall. Thus, the Blessed One established the basis for training for the hearers in discipline. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, a householder commissioned the construction of a monastery for the Sangha on the other side of the Ganges River, in the Thivaka Garden. To consecrate the monastery, he invited both Sanghas. A certain nun, diligent in virtuous practices, thought: "Today, I do not need to go for alms, so I shall strive in virtuous practices until the shadow approaches noon. Afterwards, knowing the time, I shall go." Thinking thus, she diligently engaged in virtuous practices until the shadow approached noon. Afterwards, knowing the time, she went to the bank of the Ganges River. At that time, the monks had already boarded the boat, and the boatman said: "Venerable lady, please board the boat! Beautiful one, please wait a little longer! We will depart when the other boats are full." The boatman came repeatedly, saying: "Venerable lady, please board the boat!" She also said: "Beautiful one, please wait a little longer! We will depart when the other boats are full." The boatman left, moored the boat to a post on the other side of the Ganges River, and sat down among a large crowd of people. The nun called out repeatedly, but the boatman did not respond. She waited there for a long time, until the shadow had passed noon. Afterwards, she returned to the summer house, and until her body lost its radiance, she diligently engaged in virtuous practices. When her body lost its radiance, she lowered her headscarf and lay down. The nuns came to her and said: "Venerable lady, perhaps you thought the food was someone else's, or that the meal was someone else's? What happened? Why did you lower your headscarf and lie down?" "I ate food." "Who ate it? You ate it." She replied: "I did not eat it." "Then why did you lower your headscarf?"

Then he slept. He told the nuns about this in detail, and the nuns told the monks. The monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, therefore, except for going directly to the other shore. After that, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, respect for learning, and the reduction of learning materials, and spoke to the monks about the teachings that were in accordance with this, related to this, and consistent with this, and then said to the monks: Monks, therefore, what was previously established is now permitted. My Shravaka disciples should recite the root of learning the Vinaya in this way: If any monk, together with a like-minded nun, boards a boat and goes upstream or downstream, except for going directly to the other shore, he commits a Patayantika offense. The term 'any monk' refers to the group of six monks, or anyone else like that. 'Together with a like-minded nun' refers to someone of the same Dharma. 'Having embraced' means having made an agreement. 'In the same boat' means the same boat, the same raft, the same cabin. 'Boarding' means riding. 'Going upstream' means going against the current. 'Going downstream' means going with the current. 'Except for going directly to the other shore' means excluding going directly to the other shore. 'Committing a Patayantika offense' means burning, cooking, and causing beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and places of degeneration. Furthermore, as long as that offense has not been confessed and separately confessed, it will obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is called committing a Patayantika offense. So, how does one commit a Patayantika offense? As long as a monk slightly boards a boat with a like-minded nun and goes upstream or downstream, he commits a Dukkata offense for every half Yojana, and a Patayantika offense for every Yojana. A monk with a nun's intention
