It becomes a downfall. If a bhikshu engages in defilement with a bhikshuni who is not a relative, with doubt in mind, it becomes a downfall. If a bhikshu engages in defilement with a bhikshuni who is a relative, perceiving her as a non-relative, it becomes a misdeed. If a bhikshu engages in defilement with a bhikshuni who is a relative, with doubt in mind, it becomes a misdeed. For beginners, the insane, those with disturbed minds, and those overwhelmed by feelings, there is no downfall. This twenty-fifth downfall concerning engaging in defilement is complete. The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika-arama in Shravasti. The group of six bhikshus said: "Friends, Nanda and Upananda, the black-bowled ones, even if they go with their feet smeared with monkey oil, they gain the benefits of going. Even when they come, they gain unexpected benefits, and they also make many people happy and pleased. We young ones are like turtles in a well, not going anywhere, not coming from anywhere, how can we gain benefits and make many people happy and pleased? We young ones should also go. Where to go? To wander. Sisters, look, they put on their skirts in the morning, take their bowls and Dharma robes, go to Shravasti for alms, and then go to the nuns' summer retreat, to the group of twelve bhikshunis, and say: 'Sisters, look, we are going to wander.'" Those bhikshunis cried. The group of six bhikshus said: "Sisters, why are you crying? If you go wandering, our Jeta Grove will be empty." The group of six bhikshus said: "Sisters, the Bhagavan is residing here with a retinue of one thousand two hundred and fifty, are you saying that our Jeta Grove will be empty?" They said: "The black-bowled ones don't even like to see us, how will they look at us prostrating, laying out seats, and teaching the Dharma?" Nanda said: "Sisters, then let's go together." Thullananda said: "Is it permissible for bhikshunis to go with bhikshus?" Nanda said: "It is very good, very good, where to?

Who stopped whom? Prepare plenty of provisions for the journey! They prepared plenty of provisions for the journey. The group of six monks, in the morning, having put on their lower garments, and carrying their alms bowls and robes, went to Shravasti for alms. Having gone for alms in Shravasti, they went to the nuns' summer retreat. The group of twelve nuns said to them: 'Venerable ones, please have some porridge!' When they had drunk the porridge, they ate all the provisions that had been prepared, and then they said: 'Sisters, look at how much provisions you have prepared!' They said: 'Those are what you have eaten.' The group of six monks said: 'How can one travel with so little provisions? In this way, one will become even more hungry on the road, prepare plenty of provisions!' They prepared plenty of provisions, and then set out on a journey together with the group of six monks. A beggar also set out on a journey together with them, and the monks said to him: 'These beggars are always doing evil deeds, do not go on a journey with them! You will become defiled.' The beggar said: 'I am old, and I cannot get from these people the opportunity to learn the scriptures, to read, to recite, to ask questions, to meditate, and to contemplate, what harm can these people do to me?' He ignored their words, and set out on a journey together with the group of six monks. When they reached beyond the boundary, they said: 'Happy one, near happy one, how long shall we live according to the customs of others? Come, let us live according to our own customs.' First the happy one sat down, then the happy woman sat down, then the happy one's attendant sat down, then the happy woman's attendant sat down, then the happy one's novice sat down, then the happy woman's novice sat down. Likewise, the near happy one and the crest happy woman and so on were also arranged alternately to sit down. A like-minded person and a Brahmin walking by saw them, and that person said: 'This is a

He is a practitioner. This is his wife. This is his son. This is his daughter-in-law. This is his grandson. This is his grandson's wife, know that. Having heard this, Nedadga said: Miser, I will press your neck with my foot, this is my wife. This is his son. This is his daughter-in-law. This is my grandson. This is my grandson's wife. The almsman thought, it is not right for me to die and go on a journey with these perpetrators of evil deeds, so he returned to the Jeta Grove. The monks saw him and said: Almsman, how did you pass peacefully? Venerable ones, how did you pass peacefully? The six groups of perpetrators of evil deeds quarrel with each other, destroying the Buddha's teachings with downfall. What did you do? He told the monks in detail about the situation at that time. Some monks with few desires rebuked: Why do the monks embrace the close associates of the nuns and enter the villages? They slander, throw stones, and speak ill of each other. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this incident, this origin, this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks. Like this and so on are the same as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly cultivate, like this and so on are also the same as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the six groups of monks: Monks, is it true that you embrace the close associates of the nuns and enter the villages? Venerable, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, said that this is not the behavior of a practitioner, not in accordance, not appropriate, not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do. Thus, he made various rebukes. Then, after making various rebukes, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, in order to see the ten benefits, the foundation of learning should be established for the Shravakas in the Vinaya, and they should study in the Vinaya, like this and so on are the same as before. My Shravakas should study in the Vinaya.
