P. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying at Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. The bhikkhuni Sbedma's five robes were worn out, and her samghati was also old. She obtained a large piece of cloth and wondered, 'Who will sew my Dharma robe for me?' The bhikkhunis said to her, 'Sbedma, why are you so preoccupied?' 'Sisters, my five robes are worn out, and my samghati is also old. I have obtained a large piece of cloth, but I don't know how to sew it into a Dharma robe.' 'Sbedma, are you going to beg with a golden bowl? Your bhikkhu, the venerable Chaga, is a very good friend.' Sbedma said, 'He will not sew my Dharma robe for me.' 'Have you asked him several times?' 'I have never asked him.' 'Do you take off your shoes when you hear the sound of water? Go and ask him, and he will sew it.' Sbedma went to Chaga, bowed her head at his feet, and sat down in front of him. The venerable Chaga saw the large piece of cloth and said to her, 'Sbedma, whoever has such a large piece of cloth should make a double-layered samghati from fine cloth and use the smallest effort to do good.' Sbedma said, 'Venerable, it is not that I am not offering you this large piece of cloth, but my five robes are worn out, and my samghati is also old. Please sew my samghati for me.' Chaga thought, 'If I sew it for now, all those in the twelve groups who need to have their Dharma robes sewn will bring them to me. How can I sew so many Dharma robes? If I don't sew it, I won't even give a kind word. In any case, it should be sewn in such a way that, like something boiled in a wooden vessel, it remains the same from beginning to end.' So he said to her, 'Leave it and go.' Sbedma left the cloth and went away. The group of six bhikkhus came there, saw the large piece of cloth, and said, 'Venerable Chaga, whose is this large piece of cloth?' 'It belongs to the one who should do this work for me.' 'Whose is it?' 'It is Sbedma's.' 'Then, you should do it.'

It should be sewn. Do it like that! They stretched the large cloth, cut and sewed it, and then Ācāryā took the felt and the five-colored thread and went to sew. When she arrived there, she sewed a thread picture on the felt with the five-colored thread, showing Ācāryā embracing Sbedma's neck. Then she came to the temple, folded the felt, and hung it on the robe rack. Sbedma also came, and Ācāryā said: Sbedma, I also sewed the felt, and you have come too. She folded the felt and placed it on Sbedma's shoulder, saying: For a while, do not open it until it has been measured with colors. It will be a transgression. Sbedma folded the felt in that way and went alone into the summer house. A Bhikṣuṇī friend said to her: Sbedma, please look at how Ācāryā sewed the felt. Sbedma said to her: Ācāryā said, do not open it until it has been measured with colors. It will be a transgression, she said, so she did not show it to her. Sbedma went to the summer house, and the Bhikṣuṇīs said to her: Sbedma, please look at how Ācāryā sewed the felt. Sbedma said: Ācāryā said, do not open it until it has been measured with colors. It will be a transgression, she said. The Bhikṣuṇī friends said, what transgression is there in this? So they sat behind her, snatched the felt, opened it, and looked at it. The Bhikṣuṇīs saw that Ācāryā had sewn a thread picture on the felt with the five-colored thread, showing her embracing Sbedma's neck, and they laughed loudly, saying: Sbedma, Ācāryā has been embracing you for a long time. Mahā-prajāvatī Gautamī heard this and said: Sisters, are you laughing because your head itches or your armpits itch? They said: Holy Mother, please look at how unseemly Ācāryā has acted. Sisters, the six groups of evildoers, with their depraved behavior, are destroying the Buddha's teachings with their transgressions! That was the time when they said that.

The nuns spoke to the monks. The monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said, "This is the cause of the matter, this is the origin of the matter, this is the occasion for assembling the monastic community of monks," and so on, just as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, also just as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, questioned the venerable འཆར་ཀ་ (name). "འཆར་ཀ་ (name), is it true that you make clothes for nuns who are not relatives?" "Venerable, it is true." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying, "This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, a renunciant should not do such a thing." Then, the Blessed One, having rebuked him in various ways, said to the monks, "Monks, therefore, in order to truly see the ten benefits, the Vinaya should be established as the basis of training for the disciples of the hearers," and so on, just as before. "My disciples of the hearers should recite the training of the Vinaya in this way: If any monk makes clothes for a nun who is not a relative, he commits an offense of expiation." "Any monk" refers to འཆར་ཀ་ (name), or anyone else like him. "Nun" refers to a follower of this Dharma. "Not a relative" refers to the maternal grandmother, grandfather, up to the seventh generation are relatives, beyond the seventh generation they are not relatives. "Clothes" refers to any of the seven types of clothes, namely wool, linen, fine linen, dugula cloth, cotton-wool cloth, kotamba cloth, nyo cloth. "To make" means to sew. "Commits an offense of expiation" means to burn, torment, and fall into sentient hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil paths, evil destinies, and wrong views. Furthermore, if the offense of expiation is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, the Buddha said, "Commits an offense of expiation." So, how does one commit an offense of expiation? If a monk recognizes a nun who is not a relative as not a relative and makes clothes for her, he commits an offense of expiation.
