Seek recitations and all questions! Lampa said: I have not read anything, and if I read one verse in three months, I cannot learn it, so how can I seek recitations and all questions? Nye-ga said: Didn't the Blessed One say that the dirt of secret words is not to be read? Strive a little, why can't you learn the verses? Seek it! Lampa went and said: Abbots, please give me some recitations! The venerable Lamchenpa thought: Is this temporarily praying with his own wisdom? Or is it thought to be abandoned by others? Seeing that it was abandoned by others, the venerable Lamchenpa thought: Is this temporarily taming with scolding? Or is it thought to be tamed with praise? Seeing that it was tamed with scolding, he grabbed him by the neck, drove him out of the Jeta Grove, and said: You are a dull person, an extremely dull person, a small person, an extremely small person, what are you doing by taking refuge in the teachings of the Blessed One? Just stay here! Lampa thought: Now I am neither a Shramana nor a Brahmin. Then he began to cry, and the Blessed One saw the venerable Lampa crying outside the Jeta Grove. Then, the Blessed One, driven by great compassion, went to where the venerable Lampa was, and upon arriving, said these words to the venerable Lampa: Lampa, why are you crying outside the Jeta Grove? Lampa replied: Blessed One, I was grabbed by the neck by the abbot and driven out of the Jeta Grove, saying you are a dull person, an extremely dull person, a small person, an extremely small person, what are you doing by taking refuge in the teachings of the Blessed One? Just stay here, so now I am neither a Shramana nor a Brahmin. Then, the Blessed One at that time spoke this verse: What is the praise of a child, What is the rebuke of a wise man? Here the rebuke of the wise is supreme, The praise of a child is not. Then the Blessed One said: Son, your abbot is countless kalpas.

It is not by accomplishing the six perfections through countless difficult practices over three countless eons that I have truly achieved the teachings of the Sage. I have accomplished the six perfections through countless difficult practices over three countless eons, thereby truly achieving the teachings of the Sage. Can you read better than the Tathagata? Venerable one, I am dull, extremely dull, young, extremely young. Then, the Blessed One spoke a verse about what had happened: Whoever knows that a child is a child, therefore, he is wise. A child who thinks he is wise, he is extremely foolish here. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, do not teach the Dharma from word to word, because that is not the time, because that is not the place. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, let Lampa read. The Venerable Ananda began to have Lampa read, but he could not read. Then, the Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Venerable one, I must attend to the teacher for a while, and I must listen, and I must recite the assembly, and I must teach the Dharma to the Brahmins and householders who come, so I cannot have Lampa read. The Blessed One said to him the two words "abandon dust, abandon defilement," but he did not understand these two words. The Blessed One thought: He should become familiar with the work. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Lampa: Lampa, can you wipe the monks' shoes and shoes with buckles? Venerable one, I can. Go and wipe the monks' shoes and shoes with buckles. He began to wipe the monks' shoes and shoes with buckles, but the monks did not give them to him. Then, the Blessed One said: Monks, let Lampa wipe the shoes and shoes with buckles. Why is that? Because he must become familiar with the work. For this person, the recitation of two words, etc...

Also learn afterwards. When the lamplighter was wiping the shoes of the monks and the shoes with buckles, the monks taught him the two recitations of "Abandon dust, abandon dirt," and the lamplighter also recited those two recitations at other times. Then, the venerable Lamplighter thought to himself at dawn one night: What did the Blessed One mean when he said, "Abandon dust, abandon dirt"? Did the Blessed One say it considering the inner dust? Or did he say it considering the outer dust? As he was thinking this, these three verses, which he had never heard before, appeared in his mind at that time: The desire in this dust is not the dust of soil. Dust is the name of desire, not the (name) of dust. Whoever wise has completely abandoned that dust, those will be mindful of the Sugata's teachings. The hatred in this dust is not the dust of soil. Dust is the name of hatred, not the (name) of dust. Whoever wise has completely abandoned that dust, those will be mindful of the Sugata's teachings. The ignorance in this dust is not the dust of soil. Dust is the name of ignorance, not the (name) of dust. Whoever wise has completely abandoned that dust, those will be mindful of the Sugata's teachings. Through joy, effort, and diligence, he attained increasingly higher levels of mental cultivation, and realized the moving and unmoving nature of the five aggregates of cyclic existence. All aspects of conditioned phenomena are suppressed by the nature of decay, decline, disintegration, and destruction. Because he abandoned all defilements, for what reason do sons of good families shave their hair and beards, don robes of saffron color, and out of faith alone, go forth from home to homelessness, in order to realize and accomplish the unsurpassed limit of the pure conduct in this very life through their own direct knowledge, and understand: My birth is exhausted, the pure conduct has been practiced, what was to be done has been done, I will not know another existence beyond this. Becoming an Arhat, free from desire in the three realms, with a mind that is equal to dung and gold, like the sky and the palm of the hand, like sandalwood placed down.
