Having done just that and sent (him) away, (he) revived from the point of suffocation and returned to that very monastery. The monks saw him and said: "Venerable one, why have you become like this?" He told the monks in detail about the situation at that time, and again said: "If I had not done as the venerable ones had instructed, I would not have become like this." At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: "Except for such a cause." Then, the Blessed One praised those who desired to learn, respected learning, and were diligent in learning, and gave the monks teachings that were in accordance with it, related to it, and consistent with it. Then he instructed the monks: "Monks, Therefore, the former is a prohibition, and this is a permission. My disciples should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk spreads out or has someone else spread out a bed, a small bed, a cushion filled with cotton, a woolen mat, a pillow, or a square cushion without a cover in the Sangha's (property), and does not put it away, or does not have someone else put it away, and leaves without entrusting it to a monk who is staying there, except for such a cause, it is an offense entailing expiation. Again, 'any monk' means one who adheres to this Dharma. 'Of the Sangha' means of the Sangha of the Tathagata's disciples. 'Bed' means the bed itself. 'Small bed' means the small bed itself. 'Cushion filled with cotton' means filled with cotton wool. 'Woolen mat' means the woolen mat itself. 'Pillow' means that which is used as a pillow. 'Square cushion' means a four-sided one. 'Without a cover' means without being covered. 'Spreads out' means spreading out oneself. 'Has spread out' means having someone else spread out. 'Does not put away' means not putting away oneself. 'Does not have put away' means not having someone else put away. 'Entrusting to a monk' means entrusting to a monk who is staying there. 'Without entrusting' means entrusting in five ways: saying 'Take care of this monastery,' or saying 'Look after this monastery,' or saying 'Take care of the dwelling,' or saying 'Put away the dwelling,' or saying 'Close the latch,' these five ways are the fifth.

If there is no bhikṣu, it should be entrusted to a śrāmaṇera. If there is no śrāmaṇera, it should be entrusted to a householder. If there is no householder, one should look in all four directions, hide the key, and then leave. If a bhikṣu is seen on the road, one should say to him, "I have hidden the key in a certain direction, please go and find it." The phrase "then leave" means having abandoned the protection. The venerable Ānanda asked the Blessed One, "Venerable, what is the protection for a bhikṣu's dwelling?" Ānanda replied, "I asked the Brahmin Grodzhin Kyé, and he said that any seven mango trees that are very abundant with flowers, very abundant with fruit, very abundant with branches, and separated by seven cubits, these seven mango trees, which have forty-nine cubits, that is the protection for a bhikṣu's dwelling." The phrase "unless there is such a cause" means having established such a cause. The phrase "fall into offense" means burning, cooking, and causing sentient beings to fall into hell, animals, pretas, bad destinies, bad migrations, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that offense has not been confessed and individually confessed, it will obscure virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to "fall into offense." How does one fall into offense? For example, if a bhikṣu leaves the sangha's dwelling without covering it, as long as the protection has not been abandoned, it becomes a misdeed; if the protection is abandoned, it becomes an offense. If on the road one thinks, "My sangha's dwelling has been placed in such a place," and if he thinks, "My knowledgeable companions in the same pure conduct will gather there," then that bhikṣu should generate the thought and also say in words, "I will not do that again," and also properly confess that offense. If on the road one sees a bhikṣu walking, and if he thinks, "This one will gather there," then one should say to him, "Venerable, I have placed the sangha's dwelling in a certain direction, please go and gather it," and that bhikṣu should generate the thought that he will not do that again.
