Thus he says, "Venerable, I have not seen a householder coming with a load of palm wood, or with a load of reeds, or with a load of rushes, or with a load of wood, or with a pot of clarified butter, or with a pot of sesame oil, or with a pot of honey, or with a pot of molasses, but I have seen this householder coming on two feet," if he speaks thus, it becomes an offense entailing expiation. A monk comes to a monk and says, "Venerable, have you seen a householder woman coming with all blue clothes, or all yellow clothes, or all red clothes, or all white clothes, or with a pot of clarified butter, or with a pot of sesame oil, or with a pot of honey, or with a pot of molasses?" If a monk answers something else when asked something else, it becomes an offense entailing expiation in all cases. If he does not say anything about all those categories and touches the ear, it becomes an offense of wrong-doing. If a person who is to be killed by an executioner escapes and comes to a monk and asks, "Venerable, have you seen the person who is to be killed?" If it is cold weather, the monk should say to the executioner, "Good sir, please enter the fire room and warm yourself by the fire." If it is hot weather, "Good sir, please enter the cool room, please drink cool water, please rest." If he says, "I am not cold, I am not hot, I am not thirsty, I am not tired, I am asking about the person who is to be killed," then he should look at his fingernails and say, "I see fingernails." He should look at the sky and say, "I see the sky." If he says, "I am not asking about fingernails, I am not asking about the sky, I am asking about the person who is to be killed," then that monk should look in the four directions and say, "All conditioned things are

If one thinks in one's mind that there is nothing, then saying that one has not actually seen sentient beings is without transgression. There is no transgression in reviling or holding poison. There is no transgression for the first worker, the madman, the disturbed in mind, and those afflicted by feelings. The monks asked the Blessed One Buddha: Venerable and long-lived ones, please observe those who do not listen to the words of the Sangha's pure conduct, who regard the teachings as a sharp weapon to the ear, and who are counted as sharp weapons to the ear by remaining silent. Monks, not only now, but also in the past, these people did not listen to the words of virtuous friends and suffered unrighteously. Listen! Monks, in the past, there lived a turtle and two swans in a pond. Then, at another time, there was a drought for twelve years, which caused the pond to begin to dry up. By nature, the world has not been established for a long time, and even animals can speak, so the two swans said to the turtle: Friend, we two are going to another pond. The turtle said: Friends, take me with you too. The two swans said: How shall we take you? The turtle said: I will hold the middle of the wood with my mouth, and you two will hold the two ends and carry me. The two swans said: You like to talk and cannot keep your word, so we two will not take you. The turtle said: I will keep my word. The two swans took the turtle and flew into the sky, When they flew over a cliff, they were seen by some boys and girls, who said: Wise ones, look, two swans are carrying a turtle away. The turtle also echoed. Then, when they flew over another cliff, they were again seen by some boys and girls, who said: Wise ones, look! Two swans are carrying a turtle away. The turtle thought: How long must I endure this silence? So he said: It is not the two swans who are carrying me, but...

Thus he said, "I will go myself." Having said that, the wood slipped and fell to the ground. They seized him and tormented him in an improper manner. The bird spoke a verse, saying: Those friends who wish to help, do not heed what is said, like the turtle who let go of the wood, that one will fall and suffer. Monks, at that time, the oldest goose was me. At that time, the other goose was Ananda. At that time, that turtle was this Dulwa. At that time, he also suffered improperly because he did not listen to the words of the virtuous spiritual friends, and now he is also counted among those who do not listen to the advice of those who practice the same Brahma conduct, and who are silent. The offense of not listening to advice, this thirteenth is completed. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to another house for a meal. The Sangha of monks was seated. The Bhagavan was seated on the prepared seat and began to receive alms. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, sat on the prepared seat for five reasons and began to receive alms. What are the five? Wanting to abide in inner mindfulness, wanting to teach the Dharma to the gods, wanting to visit the sick, wanting to inspect the dwelling places, and wanting to establish the basis of training for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. Here, the Bhagavan wanted to inspect the dwelling places and wanted to establish the basis of training for the Shravakas in the Vinaya, therefore he sat on the prepared seat and began to receive alms. Then, after the Sangha of monks had left, not long after, the Bhagavan thought in his mind, took the key, and went from one monastery to another, from one temple to another, from one room to another, from one promenade to another, wandering everywhere, and finally came to a great house's temple.
