In those places, too, one will be blamed for being busy and held accountable. We must find among us someone who is wise, of upright conduct, and able to thread a needle, and be happy to approach him. Therefore, who among us is wise, of upright conduct, and able to thread a needle? Among us, the venerable Aranyaka is wise, of upright conduct, and able to thread a needle, we should be happy to approach him. Then, they went to the Aranyaka and said: Venerable Aranyaka, these black-bowl monks let us live in temples built by others, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock us. They said very contemptuously, and we thought: These black-bowl monks said to us so contemptuously, you let us live in temples built by others, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock us. Come, let us build a temple such as no black-bowl monk has ever built before. If we all work hard, these black-bowl monks will always find opportunities to criticize us, they will say that the six groups of monks have all started working hard, and they will also find opportunities. In our begging dwellings, too, one will be blamed for being busy and held accountable. We thought, we should make the venerable Aranyaka happy for the sake of the temple, and pray to you.

May this arm subdue those who have black begging bowls. Ananda said: It can be done that way with a method. Those people were very happy. The venerable Ananda washed his feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, and sat down, thinking about what method could be used to complete the monastery for the Sangha. He began to contemplate who had particular faith in whom. He thought to himself: For the time being, the world, including the gods, has particular faith in the Blessed One. A certain family has faith in the venerable Kundina. A certain family has faith in the venerable Mahakasyapa. A certain family has faith in the venerable Sariputra. A certain family has faith in the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana. A certain family has faith in the venerable Aniruddha. A certain family has faith in the venerable Revata. Like this, in Kausambi there is a wealthy Brahmin, with much wealth, many enjoyments, and a vast and extensive estate, but he is stingy, narrow-minded, and does not even give food to crows, holding on to everything tightly. He has much property and gold, so if he could be brought in

Thinking that if he could do it, the monastery of the Sangha would be completed. With this in mind, he made great efforts to dawn the day, and in the morning, he put on his skirt, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Kauśāmbī for alms. After begging for alms in two or three houses, he took a small amount of flour and was about to enter the house of that Brahmin when the gatekeeper stopped him, saying, "Holy one, please wait! Do not enter!" He said, "The Well-faced Bhagavan said that there are five places that we should not go to: the dwelling of musicians, the dwelling of prostitutes, the tavern, the dwelling of outcastes, and the palace of the king. So, is this house the dwelling of musicians? Or the dwelling of prostitutes? A tavern? The dwelling of outcastes? The palace of the king? Why are you stopping me?" The gatekeeper said, "Holy one, you have said much, but this is neither the dwelling of musicians, nor the dwelling of prostitutes, a tavern, the dwelling of outcastes, nor the palace of the king. It is the house of a certain Brahmin." Upagupta thought, "Where there is not even a brief meeting, what else could there be?" Thus, he was blocked at the door, and sat down dejectedly in his heart. At this time, a householder's son was born, and twelve people gathered together to celebrate, singing and dancing, and the gatekeeper began to carefully examine those people. When he was not looking at the door, the venerable Upagupta was able to enter, and after entering, he used his behavior to purify the place away from desire. The Brahmin saw this and said, "Venerable Upagupta has come, please sit on this seat." After Upagupta sat down, he did not find an opportunity to speak, and Upagupta said, "Brahmin, I have begged for some flour, please have someone sift it for me." The Brahmin instructed his daughter, "Daughter, sift the holy one's alms flour and offer it up." That daughter began to sift the flour, and the venerable Upagupta began to examine the flour. The Brahmin said, "Holy one, what are you looking at? Is it a living being? If there really is, what should we do? Can't we eat it?
