It obscures those, therefore it is said to be a downfall. How does it become a downfall? If a bhikshu, even a little, uses the sky above the sangha's monastery as a toilet, or knowingly sits or lies down with weight on a place where grass grows, it becomes a downfall in all cases. There is no downfall if it is covered with thatch, covered with small thatch, covered with planks, covered with raised planks, or on a slope. There is also no downfall for setting up footstools and backrests. There is no downfall for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings. This concludes the eighteenth downfall of sitting on a place where grass grows. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Kundanavana monastery of Nadanka in Kaushambi. At that time, the venerable Udayin knowingly watered grass, dung, and earth with water containing living beings, or had others water them. The bhikshus said to him: Venerable Udayin, do not knowingly water grass, dung, and earth with water containing living beings, nor have others water them. Udayin said: Did someone count and hand it over to me? What is the fault in going to the great eastern sea? What is the fault in going to the great southern, western, and northern seas? What is the fault in going to rivers, lakes, and puddles? Why do bhikshus, for small matters, scold bhikshus for knowingly watering grass, dung, and earth with water containing living beings, or having others water them, and rebuke and criticize them? At that time, the bhikshus reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan, because of this event, this origin, and this situation, convened the bhikshu sangha. And so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavans, knowingly cultivate, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked the venerable Udayin: Udayin, you knowingly water grass and dung, and earth, with water containing living beings.

and, is it true to cause planting? There are no monks. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, condemned that which is not the conduct of a renunciate, not in accordance, not suitable, not in accordance with the Dharma, as not the work of one who has gone forth. Then, after the Bhagavan had condemned in various ways, he spoke to the monks: Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits perfectly, the foundation of training for the hearers should be established in the Vinaya, as before. My hearers should recite the foundation of training in the Vinaya in this way: Again, whatever monk knowingly plants grass, dung, or on the ground with water containing living beings, or causes it to be planted, commits a downfall. Again, what is meant by 'whatever monk'? It means desire or whatever is like that. What is meant by 'knowingly'? It means that he himself knows it or by others speaking. What is meant by 'containing living beings'? Containing living beings are of two kinds: those that can be seen with the eye and those that can be caught by a water strainer. What is meant by 'with water'? It means with water itself. What is meant by 'grass'? It means grass itself. What is meant by 'dung'? It also means dung itself. What is meant by 'on the ground'? It also means on the ground itself. What is meant by 'plants'? It means by oneself. What is meant by 'causes to be planted'? It means by another. What is meant by 'a downfall'? It means burning, boiling, and falling into the hells of sentient beings, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, evil paths, and wrong downfalls. Furthermore, as long as that downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a downfall. How does one fall? If a monk, with the thought of living beings in water containing living beings, plants grass, dung, or on the ground, or causes it to be planted,

Furthermore, if a bhikṣu, being doubtful about water without living beings, uses it to plant grass, manure, or soil, or allows others to plant, he commits a pāyantika. If a bhikṣu pours out a large cesspool with living beings, he commits a stūlātyaya for as many living beings as die. He commits a duṣkṛta for as many living beings as do not die. If a bhikṣu cuts down a large cesspool with living beings, he commits a stūlātyaya for as many living beings as die. He commits a duṣkṛta for as many living beings as do not die. There is no offense for the first offender, the insane, the mentally disturbed, or those afflicted by feelings. The nineteenth stūlātyaya concerning the use of living beings is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Kuṇḍa Garden of Nāḍaṅka in Kauśāmbī. The group of six bhikṣus were dwelling in monasteries built by others, and while they were dwelling there, Gava and Neyagava said, "Look, this monastery has become dilapidated! This monastery has cracked! The boundary of this monastery has been damaged! The surface of this monastery has been damaged! This is like the house of a demon!" They mocked in this way. The bhikṣus said to them, "Venerable ones, you are temporarily dwelling in monasteries built by others, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock!" Having said this, they became filled with pride and began to speak to each other, "Gava and Neyagava, these black-bowled ones, said to us, 'You are temporarily dwelling in monasteries built by others, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock!' They are extremely contemptuous. Come, let us build a monastery such as no black-bowled one has ever built before! If we all strive with our hands, these black-bowled ones will always seek opportunities with us, and they will find an opportunity to say that all the group of six are engaged in manual labor! Where are our begging houses?
