Thus it is declared. Monks, why do some monks, with specific intentions, criticize other monks, saying that they are flattering, deceitful, and seeking gain? At that time, the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: If a monk even slightly flatters another monk, it will entirely become a cause for downfall. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's monastery in Shravasti. At that time, the venerable Chaga said to the newly ordained monks: Venerable ones, come! We will go wandering, and there we will also defeat the opponents, proclaim our own fame, and accomplish gains. And you will also be free from the busyness of begging bowls, robes, nets, bowls, belts, recitation, reading, chanting, yoga, and contemplation. We will also attend to the sick among you. Thus he made them happy. When the monks realized that this was a bad practice, none of them were willing to go wandering with him. When he went wandering alone, he went to a monastery in a mountain cave. In that monastery, there was no place for defecation or urination. There, the monks placed earthenware pots, and after defecating and urinating in them, they would discard them. When Chaga entered that monastery, the monks knew that this was a bad practice, so none of the monks paid attention to him. He thought: These black-bowled ones will not like me. Having thought this, he climbed onto the top of that monastery. When he saw the earthenware pots placed there, he said: Is this monastery a copper cauldron? He grabbed those earthenware pots with his toes and threw them outside. The monks got up at night, and when they did not see the earthenware pots, they defecated and urinated in the open space. Then, when night turned to dawn, Brahmins and faithful patrons arrived.

We shall also proclaim our own fame, and we shall also acquire offerings, and you will not be busy with bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, belts, recitation, reading, memorization, yoga, and attention. We shall also take care of you sick ones." He encouraged them in this way. When the monks knew that this person was one who practiced evil everywhere, no one was willing to go on pilgrimage with him, so he went on pilgrimage alone, to a temple in a rocky mountain. When Charka entered that temple, the monks knew that this person was one who practiced evil everywhere, so no monks paid attention to him. He thought: "These black-bowled ones do not like me." So he ate a pill of purgative medicine and entered the fire room and sat down, and there he began to have diarrhea. The Blessed One taught: "One should care for the sick in three periods of the day." Then some elder monks came to inquire about his illness. They asked him: "Venerable one, are you well?" He said: "I am well." The elders sat for a moment and were about to leave, and he said: "Elders, please sit for a moment!" They sat for a moment and were about to leave, and he said again: "Elders, please sit for a moment longer!" The venerable one was deliberately thinking of flattering.

The monastery was already half finished, and the venerable Āyukā went to a householder and said: Householder, why is the monastery not finished? Did the Blessed One not say: "Quickly engage in virtue, and turn your mind away from evil. If you are slow to do good, the mind will delight in evil." Venerable one, I have kārṣāpaṇas, but I do not have workers. Householder, did the Blessed One not say that monks can provide labor? If the venerable one allows us to provide labor, that would be great. Āyukā went to the monastery and struck the gaṇḍī. The Blessed One
