Did some get sick? Having heard that, they said, "Don't call the teacher. Prepare a bed in the Oni residence, and also place water for washing feet and a towel for wiping feet. Sleep there!" Charka said, "Venerable ones, whom did you ask before washing your feet?" The teacher was delayed for a long time, and after asking each other, they washed their feet. Charka scolded and said, "Having come out of the monastery, go to those who are disrespectful and without status, who give lodging and teach the Dharma." He drove them out of the monastery. There, they were in danger as the night was exposed to the wind and rain without shelter. The next morning, they got up early and said, "Teacher, we prostrate! We are going. Where to? To Shravasti." "Wait a moment, and I will take care of you who are sick." The teacher said, "You have made us, who were not sick, sick, and now you want to take care of the sick?" They went to Shravasti, and the monks said to them, "Venerable ones, welcome! Welcome! Did you have a good journey? Did you have a good journey? We were frozen by Teacher Charka in the night wind and rain." "Why?" They told the story in detail. Some monks who were dissatisfied with the behavior of the monks scolded, "Why do monks drive monks out of the Sangha's monastery?" They rebuked and insulted. The monks reported the matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, etc., as before. Do the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly? etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Charka, "Charka, is it true that you drove monks out of the Sangha's monastery?" "Venerable one, it is not." The Buddha, the Blessed One, condemned, "This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not to be done by one who has gone forth." Then, the

Having condemned in various ways, the departed one spoke to the monks: Monks, therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, the basis of discipline should be established for the hearers, and so on, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of discipline in this way: If any monk, being angry, agitated, and fierce, being displeased, expels a monk from the monastery of the Sangha, or causes him to be expelled, he commits a downfall. The Blessed One thus established the basis of discipline for the hearers. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was an earthen monastery, in which a sick monk was staying. Soon, five-colored clouds gathered, and the monks said to him: Venerable one, five-colored clouds have gathered, the monastery may collapse, please come out! He said: I cannot come out by myself. The monks, regretting that they had not helped him out, after the rain fell, the monastery collapsed and crushed the monk, and when he passed away, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One praised those who desired to learn, respected learning, and reduced the means of learning, and spoke to the monks words of Dharma that were in accordance with it, in the majority, and in accordance with it, and said to the monks: Monks, therefore, the former is the enactment, and the latter is the permission, my hearers should recite the basis of discipline in this way: If any monk, being angry, agitated, and fierce, being displeased, expels a monk from the monastery of the Sangha, or causes him to be expelled, unless there is such a cause, he commits a downfall. Again, what is meant by "if any monk"? It refers to so-and-so, or any other such person. What is meant by "being angry, agitated, and fierce, being displeased"? It refers to being angry and being overwhelmed by the power of anger. What is meant by "of the Sangha"? It refers to the Sangha of the Tathagata's hearers. What is meant by "from the monastery"? It refers to any place where the four activities, walking, standing, sitting,

Beginning with what is permissible to do for excretion and sleep. A Bhikshu is one who possesses this Dharma. Expulsion means by oneself. Causing to be expelled means by another. Except for such a cause means excluding such a cause. A Patayantika means it burns, torments, and causes beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, lower realms, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as the Patayantika is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is called a Patayantika. So, how does one become subject to a Patayantika? If a Bhikshu becomes angry, agitated, and threatening, and is displeased, if he expels a Bhikshu from the Sangha's monastery or causes another to expel him, then he will completely incur a Patayantika. There is no Patayantika for a beginner, a madman, one who is mentally disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. The sixteenth Patayantika of expulsion is complete. The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the venerable Charka said to the new Bhikshus, "Venerable ones, come here! Let's go on pilgrimage, and there we will also subdue our opponents, proclaim our fame, accomplish gains, and you will be free from being preoccupied with alms bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, belts, teachings, recitations, memorizations, yoga, and mental activities." Having encouraged them in this way, they reported to their teachers and preceptors, "Preceptor, we are going on pilgrimage." "With whom?" "With the venerable Charka." "Venerable ones, he is a practitioner of bad conduct and will displease you." "Preceptor, the venerable Charka is like our parents, why would he displease us?" They disregarded those words and went on pilgrimage with him. When Charka had crossed the outer boundary, he said, "Venerable ones, why don't you
