Then some monks said: "We came from that monastery sleeping on mats." "Where did you leave the mats?" "We listened to those old men and threw them outside with force." Therefore, those who practice brahmacharya are being reviled. At this time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: "It should not be discarded like that, but should be asked of the monks residing there." When many monks were wandering together, they spent the night by a well, and they also pulled a lot of grass and spread grass mats. Not far from them, a Brahmin also spent the night. The monks and their companions left early the next morning, and the companion also returned. That Brahmin inquired about the matter from that companion, and then returned with that companion. That companion also slept by the well on the mats they had previously spread. That companion and the naked ascetics came together, and they slept on the same mats that the monks had slept on. At this time, one of the naked ascetics said: "What conscious being has occupied this place?" Another naked ascetic said: "You have drunk too much wine dregs, so you are occupied by the illusions you desire." He looked at the mat and saw many lice on it, and said: "Who slept on this mat?" Not far from them, the sleeping Brahmin heard him say this and said: "The Shakyaputra ascetics slept on this mat." They said: "Wise ones, if the Shakyaputra ascetics are considered the most intelligent people in the world, how could they throw the mats in the wilderness like this?"

They did not give it to them. The Blessed One instructed: "It should be given." After they dried clothes there, they said, "We did not spread it," so they did not discard the grass. The Blessed One instructed: "They should be asked whether they will discard the grass or not. If they say they will discard it, then give it to them.
