Those who have... squeeze skin, flesh, and blood, and give alms, perform meritorious deeds. Regarding this, the monks think that they enjoy without knowing warmth and without discrimination. Monks, you should give with faith, enjoy moderately, abandon enjoyment, enjoy on time, enjoy prudently, and enjoy sparingly. That would be good. Intermediate summary: Moderate, abandoning, similarly timely and prudent, enjoying sparingly. Then, the Blessed One praised moderate, abandoning, timely, prudent, and sparing enjoyment, and said to the monks: Monks, therefore, in order to fully see the ten benefits, the basis of learning should be established for the hearers in the discipline. As mentioned before. My hearers should recite the basis of learning in the discipline as follows: If any monk lays down a grass mat or a leaf mat in the monastery of the Sangha, or has it laid down, and leaves without collecting it or having it collected, it is an offense. The Blessed One thus established the basis of learning for the hearers in the discipline. Many monks traveled together for a common purpose and arrived at a rocky mountain. There, they went to see a patron and contemptuously asked the patron: Patron, please lend us a place to stay. The patron said: I can lend it to you with a vow, if you accept my offering and then leave, I will lend it to you. The monks said: Patron, we depend on a common purpose, and we will eat only if the common purpose allows it. Patron, is there a bed or a small bed here? Venerables, there is not. Those monks had many laypeople and novices, and they took a lot of grass and laid out a mat that barely covered their knees. The common purpose was accomplished at dawn or before dawn, and those monks left without collecting the mat. The patron thought: If the venerable ones were staying here, their umbrellas

Thinking, "Let me go and see first," that person went. After some time, he saw those monks leaving only at dawn. That householder, together with his wife, discarded those cushions, and as a result, they completely disappeared the next morning. Many other monks, together in agreement, went on a journey, and they went to that very mountain rock. There, they went to that householder and requested, saying, "Householder, please lend us a place to stay." The householder said, "Venerable ones, I will lend it with a vow. If you do not spread expensive cushions, I will lend it." Householder: "Is there a bed or a cot here where we can sleep?" Venerable ones: "There is not." Householder: "How can we sleep on the bare ground?" Venerable ones: "Those of you who practice the same celibacy have arrived, and if they spread expensive cushions, without ever leaving the ground, when I and my attendants discard it, it will completely disappear the next morning." Those monks spent the night on the bare ground, and the next morning they got up early and left. Gradually wandering, they arrived at Śrāvastī. The monks saw them and said, "Virtuous ones, welcome, welcome! Did you pass comfortably?" "How did you pass comfortably?" "We spent the night turning and tossing on the bare ground." "On which mountain rock did you stay?" "At such and such a place." "In whose house?" "In so and so's house." There, some monks said, "We came sleeping on the cushions in that householder's house." "Where did you leave those cushions?" "We left them right there." Therefore, when they said that householder was being cursed, those monks petitioned the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said, "Cushions should also be discarded from other houses." The Bhagavan said, "Cushions should also be discarded from other houses." Having said that, many monks together in agreement went on a journey, and then went to a mountain rock. On that mountain rock, a householder, for the sake of the śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas who had arrived unexpectedly, took a lot of grass from afar and prepared cushions.
