Also powerless. Such eloquent speakers exist. Children, what am I saying? Am I saying that on this earth there is no one else who can speak except me alone? The earth holds many precious things, so the earth is full of beautiful things. Abbot, soon that place will also be seen, and one will also be close to the water's edge. Also, pay homage to those eloquent speakers. Also, defeat the opponents. Also, proclaim one's own fame. Also, accomplish benefits. Let us go to the central region. That Brahmin, being attached to his students and having few followers, said this to those young men: Children, if that is the case, take whetstones, tree bark, staffs, spoons, measures, pills, etc., and let us go to the central region. After they took those things, that Brahmin and those young men went together to the central region, and he defeated some opponents and joined the opponents' firewood together. Some he struck on the head with ash pots. Some he completely abandoned from afar in the hip position like crows. Some he greeted with umbrellas, banners, and flags. Some admitted to being students, and eventually subdued opponents in villages, towns, markets, and marketplaces, and went to Shravasti. (Vinaya-vibhanga, Volume Thirty-eight) In Shravasti, a Brahmin with many followers heard that a Brahmin opponent had come from the south. Having heard this, he said to his followers: Wise ones, know this. I have heard that a Brahmin opponent has come to Shravasti from the south. If he debates in a certain field of knowledge, you should debate with him. If he debates in a certain field of knowledge, you should debate with him. If for a while you can defeat him, that is excellent. If you cannot defeat him, send him to the monks of the Shakya's sons. If for a while you send the monks of the Shakya's sons

If he could subdue them, he would become the most excellent Brahmin. If, however, he were to be subdued by the renunciates of the Sakya's sons, then a great and virtuous collection of pleasant sounds would manifestly arise for us in all directions, saying, 'That disputant who came from the south was subdued in Sravasti.' That Brahmin who came from the south arose early the next morning, covered his armpits with cloth, and holding a grass torch, entered Sravasti. The Brahmin youths of Sravasti said to him, 'Master, why are your armpits covered with cloth?' He said, 'I have heard that if I hold too much, it might burst, so I am doing this to prevent that from happening.' They said, 'If that is the case, it would be appropriate to wrap it with copper plates.' 'Why are you carrying a grass torch? Are you going to enter the darkness of those who do not know the world with the light of knowledge?' He, together with those, in whatever field of knowledge they engaged in conversation, he rendered them without confidence. When he had rendered all without confidence, they said, 'Master, are you only destroying your own side?' He said, 'Do I have any other side?' They said, 'Yes, the renunciates of the Sakya's sons have appeared not long ago. They greatly desire the complete purification of the four castes, and they are teachers, guides, and complete destroyers. For a while, converse with them.' 'Where do they reside?' 'In this very Sravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden.' 'Who is the best among them at speaking?' 'All of them are wise and their conduct is clear, but the best among them at speaking is the renunciate called 'Hand-held Lineage'.' 'That's fine.' 'In this very Sravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden.' While they were conversing in this way, the Sakya's son, Hand-held Lineage, went to that very place. Those Brahmin youths said to that Brahmin, 'Master, for a while, set aside the other renunciates of the Sakya's sons, and converse with this Sakya's son, Hand-held Lineage.'

Then he saw him and said: This one has the title of scholar, so he is the chief of speakers. Having said that, he went to him and said: O Bhikshu, I have learned some letters from the Lama, I would like to discuss a little with you. The Brahmin thought: How should I refute him with sharp arguments? If you also come here, do so. Which day? Tomorrow. In which direction? In a certain garden. Let it be so, he said and left. After that, the Brahmin pondered various arguments, thinking if he says this, I will say that, and the whole night passed. The descendant of the Shakya clan thought: If I temporarily refute the Brahmin, then I will lose a hundred doors, how should I fill my stomach? If the Brahmin refutes me, then my fame will disappear. The Brahmin also got up early the next morning and went to the garden, he waited there for a long time, and seeing that he did not come, he entered Shravasti (Śrāvastī, ancient Indian city). The descendant of the Shakya clan also missed the time for debate, and entered Shravasti to beg for food, and the Brahmin saw him and said: O Bhikshu, you did not come to that garden. The descendant said: Which garden was I called to? Let's debate in a certain garden tomorrow. The descendant said: Brahmin, I completely forgot. The Brahmin thought: I was thinking about various arguments all night, and when it dawned, this Bhikshu actually said that he completely forgot, either he is a great minister, or he is a clear-headed person. So he said: O Bhikshu, tomorrow then. The Brahmin said: Let it be so. The Brahmin went to that garden again early the next day, he waited there for a long time, and seeing that he did not come, he entered Shravasti again. The descendant of the Shakya clan also missed the time for debate.
