Now, (the Buddha) was dwelling in Jetavana-anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in the Jeta Grove. At that time, in Śrāvastī, there was a monk named Śākyaputra-bhikṣu-lag-brgyud, who was very talkative and diligent in following the speech of others. At that time, a young man who desired secret mantras and was searching for secret mantras went from the Central Land to the Southern Road. There, there was a Brahmin who had mastered the Vedas and the branches of the Vedas, and who was the teacher of the Brahmins residing in various places. That young man went to that Brahmin, and after arriving, he bowed his head with peacefulness and gentle conduct, and sat to one side. Then, that Brahmin spoke to that young man with a common greeting, saying, "Young man, welcome. Where do you come from? What do you desire?" The young man said, "I come from the Central Land and wish to serve the feet of the teacher." (The Brahmin asked,) "For what purpose?" (The young man replied,) "For the sake of studying the Vedas." (The Brahmin said,) "Young man, very well, do so. This is what a Brahmin should do." That young man began to study the Vedas with that Brahmin. The custom of those young men was this: when they were not studying, sometimes they would go to the riverbank to bathe, sometimes they would go to the city to sightsee, and sometimes they would go to fetch firewood for the fire sacrifice. Once, when they were not studying, they went to fetch firewood for the fire sacrifice, and on the way, this kind of conversation arose among them: "Hey, people of the Kuda lineage, people of the Bada lineage, people of the Śandili lineage, people of the Bharadvaja lineage, people of the Fifth lineage, people of the Near Fifth lineage, we should ask you, from which land have you come?" Then, one young man said, "I am from the Eastern Land." Others said, "I am from the Southern Road." Yet another said, "I am from the Western side." Yet another said, "I am from the Northern Road." That young man said, "I am from the Central Land." They said, "Learned ones, we have seen and heard of all lands, but we have not seen or heard of the Central Land. In the East dwell the intelligent, in the Southern Road dwell the deceitful, in the West...

In the land of Kiyi, there are deceitful people. On the northern road, there are harsh words. Thus, the verses were spoken. Then he asked: Shedbu, what is the central region like? Wise one, the central region is the most excellent of all regions. It has rice fields, rows of sugarcane trees, abundant cattle and buffaloes, is filled with beggars, populated by people from the central region, abandoned by people from the border regions, and frequented by wise people. There, the Ganges River is known as a place of auspiciousness and merit, as well as good fortune and purity, and as a pure place. Its banks are moist, and it is the abode of ascetics. There are nine hundred and eighteen rivers flowing there. If ascetics practice austerities there, they desire to ascend to heaven with their own bodies. Hey, Shedbu, go and visit, and ask about other things. Are there those considered wise in the central region? Wise one, didn't I say from the beginning that the central region is filled with people from the central region, abandoned by people from the border regions, and frequented by wise people? Shedbu, you did say that. Shedbu, the central region is like this: for example, are there such eloquent speakers like our Khenpo? Wise one, in the central region, there are those whose faces our Khenpo cannot even bear to look at, eloquent speakers like that. Shedbu praised the central region in such a way that all of them wanted to go to the central region. Then, Shedbu and the others searched for firewood. Carrying loads of firewood, they went to the place where the Brahmin lived, placed the loads of firewood on one side, went to the place where the Brahmin lived, and said to the Brahmin: Khenpo, please be aware! Shedbu praised the central region in such a way that all of us want to go to the central region. The Brahmin said: Children, should you travel as much as you have heard? In this way, hearing about regions makes one happy, so listen, but do not go. Khenpo, from Shedbu's words, it is known that in the central region, there are those whose faces our Khenpo cannot even bear to look at.
