Sa. While begging for alms in Shravasti, he was seen by a Brahmin who said, 'Hey, Bhikshu, do not go to that garden.' Lagguada said, 'Brahmin, is that the only thing I have to do? I must attend to the teacher, I must listen, I must attend assemblies for recitation, and I must also teach the Dharma to the Brahmins and householders who come.' The Brahmin said, 'Bhikshu, are you not deliberately trying to raise your status?' 'Yes.' At that time, Lagguada, the son of the Shakyas, was wandering around, making marks and signs. After wandering around and making marks and signs, he deliberately did not go. Other knowledgeable non-Buddhists would say, 'These Shakyaputra Shramanas are liars, they have not turned away from lying, they have not abandoned it, they have not individually abandoned it. They wander around, making marks and signs, and after wandering around and making marks and signs, they deliberately do not go.' They would insult, ridicule, and slander. At that time, the Bhikshus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, convened the Sangha of Bhikshus, etc., as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Lagguada, the son of the Shakyas: 'Lagguada, is it true that you wander around, making marks and signs, and after wandering around and making marks and signs, you deliberately do not go?' 'Yes, Venerable One.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying, 'This is not the behavior of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not suitable, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something a renunciate should do.' Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One said to the Bhikshus, 'Therefore, Bhikshus, having truly seen the ten benefits, let the foundation of training for the Shravakas be established in the Vinaya,' etc., as before. My Shravaka disciples should recite the foundation of training in the Vinaya in this way:
