Ra bya ste. Knowingly speaking falsehoods is a downfall. "Knowingly" means after discernment. Regarding speaking falsehoods, there are nine types of falsehoods, also eight types, also seven types, also six types, also five types, also four types, also three types, also two types. Among them, what are the nine types of falsehoods? Accusing without basis of incurring a defeat (parajika), a remainder of community (sanghavasesa), a downfall (patayantika), an offense to be confessed (pratidesaniya), and reproach with a misdeed (duskrita); accusing without basis of a decline in discipline, a decline in view, a decline in ritual, and reproach with a decline in livelihood. What are the eight types of falsehoods? Accusing without basis of incurring a defeat (parajika), a remainder of community (sanghavasesa), a downfall (patayantika), an offense to be confessed (pratidesaniya), and reproach with a misdeed (duskrita); accusing without basis of seeing, hearing, and suspecting.

When lying, one thinks, "I am lying," and after lying, one thinks, "I have lied." Lying is not just one single thing. Lying can lead to defeat (ཕམ་པར་འགྱུར།, defeat), it can also lead to sanghavasesa (དགེ་འདུན་ལྷག་མ།, remaining in the sangha). Lying can also lead to a grave offense (ཉེས་པ་སྦོམ་པོ།, gross offense), it can also lead to a downfall (ལྟུང་བྱེད།, cause of downfall), and it can also lead to a misdeed (ཉེས་བྱས།, misdeed). So, what kind of lying leads to defeat? For example, a bhikshu claims to have attained superior human qualities (མིའི་ཆོས་བླ་མ།, superior human dharma) when he has not. What kind of lying leads to sanghavasesa? For example, a bhikshu, out of anger and resentment, wishes to destroy the brahmacharya of other bhikshus, and groundlessly accuses a pure and innocent bhikshu of an offense that leads to defeat. What kind of lying leads to a grave offense? For example, a bhikshu intentionally distorts the Dharma within the sangha, presenting what is not Dharma as Dharma, and what is Dharma as not Dharma, presenting what is not Vinaya as Vinaya, and what is Vinaya as not Vinaya. What kind of lying leads to a misdeed? For example, when a bhikshu is reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half-month, and is asked, "Are you pure?" he remains silent even though he is not pure. What kind of lying leads to a downfall? All other forms of lying, apart from the four mentioned above, lead to a downfall. The term "downfall" refers to burning, tormenting, and causing beings to fall into hell, the animal realm, the realm of pretas, evil destinies, and wrong views. Furthermore, if these downfalls are not confessed and separately confessed, they obscure virtuous qualities, and therefore are called "downfalls." So, how does one fall? In the intermediate summary, it says: Do not forget, do not doubt, consciousness is the last. For what a bhikshu has not seen, not heard, not sensed, and not known, he distorts his consciousness, and then endures, desires, has intelligence, and discriminates.
