When thus separately examining, if I know that the verbal action I have done, which is past, exhausted, ceased, separated, and transformed, will harm myself and others, is unwholesome, a source of suffering, matures into suffering, then, O wise one, you should confess and repent of that verbal action before the teacher and those who practice the holy life, the wise ones, and you should also strive to protect yourself in the future. O wise one, when you thus separately examine, if I know that the verbal action I have done, which is past, exhausted, ceased, separated, and transformed, will benefit myself and others, is wholesome, a source of happiness, matures into happiness, then, O wise one, you should practice it day and night with joy and great joy, and abide in it with mindfulness and awareness. O wise one, the mind arises dependent on past formations, therefore you should examine the action of the mind in this way: Is the action of my mind, which arises dependent on past formations, harmful to myself and others, unwholesome, a source of suffering, and maturing into suffering? Or does the action of the mind benefit myself and others, is it wholesome, a source of happiness, and maturing into happiness? You should repeatedly examine separately.
