The Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha, rebuked the group of six monks, saying: "Monks, I have prescribed that one should teach the Dharma with five or six sentences in the presence of women. When you teach the Dharma with five sentences, do you knowingly enter the sixth sentence? And when you teach the Dharma with six sentences, do you also knowingly enter the seventh sentence?" They replied: "Yes, Blessed One." The Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha, rebuked them, saying: "This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules. This is not something that a renunciate should do." Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks, therefore, you should truly see these ten benefits and establish the basis for the disciples to train in the Vinaya, just as before." My disciples should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya in this way: "If a monk teaches the Dharma to a woman, exceeding five or six sentences, except for a knowledgeable person, it is a Patayantika offense." "Again, the monk" refers to the group of six monks, or anyone else like them. "In the presence of a woman" refers to a woman, or a young woman, who is able to fully understand the meaning of the Dharma, whether it is well-spoken or poorly spoken. "Exceeding five or six sentences" means that when teaching the Dharma with five sentences, one knowingly exceeds the sixth sentence; and when teaching the Dharma with six sentences, one also knowingly exceeds the seventh sentence. "Dharma" refers to what is spoken by the Buddha, or what is spoken by the Buddha's disciples. "To teach" means to explain. "Except for a knowledgeable person" means excluding a knowledgeable person. "It is a Patayantika offense" means that it burns, cooks, and causes beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and wrong views. Furthermore, if this offense is not confessed, and not confessed separately, it will obstruct virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a Patayantika offense. So, how does one commit a Patayantika offense? If a monk teaches the Dharma to a woman on the roof of a building, and he speaks five or six
