They replied, "Sisters, he knows the science of examining flesh marks, and through that he knows." The noble ones said, "Should we tell everything he knows?" Then they began to scold, mock, and revile. At that time, the Bhikshus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One thought, "All these faults have arisen because the Bhikshus teach the Dharma to women. Therefore, Bhikshus should not teach the Dharma to women." The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are impermanent, teaching the Dharma with six words. They said: Holy ones, please teach the Dharma again. Sisters, the Blessed One temporarily allowed that much. They said: Holy ones, very well, we will also offer a little food. When they said this, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Let the men stand aside, and teach the Dharma as much as you want. When the monks went for alms, the women said: Holy ones, please teach the Dharma. The monks said: Sisters, bring some men. Holy ones, what can men do? Sisters, the Blessed One allowed the men to stand aside, and teach the Dharma as much as you want, thus establishing the basis for learning. Holy ones, very well, we will be very hidden and very cautious, and the holy ones will also teach the Dharma without fear, so they brought the men, and the monks also taught the Dharma as they wished. The group of six monks, after going for alms, said to the women: Sisters, please sit down, and we will teach the Dharma. They said: Holy ones, please wait a moment until we bring some men. The group of six monks said: Dogs, monkeys, calves, old men lying in ashes, cripples, and children sitting, what other men are needed besides these? Thus they taught the Dharma there and left. Sisters, you don't preach the Dharma to men like us, who is it that makes you preach the Dharma to men like us?' They said, 'It is the group of six monks.' That is why their situation is like that.' When they said this, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: 'Having put aside wise men, one should preach the Dharma as one wishes.' The Blessed One instructed, 'In the place of women, one should preach the Dharma with five or six words.' When the group of six monks preached the Dharma with five words, they deliberately added the sixth word; when they preached the Dharma with six words, they also deliberately added the seventh word. The monks said to them, 'Virtuous ones, the Blessed One instructed that one should preach the Dharma with five or six words, when you preach the Dharma with five words, do you deliberately add the sixth word; when you preach the Dharma with six words, do you also deliberately add the seventh word?' They said, 'Virtuous ones, for what is suitable for five words, six words are also suitable; for what is suitable for six words, seven words are also suitable, did six words and seven words eat public property, drink alcohol? Why should it be specifically prohibited?' The monks with few desires rebuked, 'The Blessed One instructed that one should preach the Dharma with five or six words in the place of women, why do the monks deliberately add the sixth word when preaching the Dharma with five words; and also deliberately add the seventh word when preaching the Dharma with six words?' They rebuked, slandered, and blamed. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, just like before. 'The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses,' and so on, is also like before.
