Those who had gone forth received great gains and honor, and they were very diligent in washing their robes, and they possessed alms bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, and extra belts. Although the Blessed One taught them the Dharma from time to time, they did not see the truth. Then the Blessed One thought: Why do the Shakya renunciates not see the truth? He thought that it was because they were very diligent in washing their robes, and they possessed alms bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, and extra belts. If I were to blame these Shakya renunciates, it would be difficult to dissuade them. Therefore, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are the most skilled at taming beings, so the Blessed One told the monks: Monks, now for these three months, I wish to enter retreat. Except for the attendant monk Pindolabalabharadvaja, and on the days of the fortnightly recitation of the Pratimoksha, no monk should come near me. The Sangha of monks should also make a rule: During the rainy season, except for the attendant monk Pindolabalabharadvaja, and on the days of the fortnightly recitation of the Pratimoksha, none of us should go to see the Blessed One. If during the rainy season, except for the attendant monk Pindolabalabharadvaja, and on the days of the fortnightly recitation of the Pratimoksha, any of us goes to see the Blessed One, we will make him incur a penalty for transgression. When the Blessed One entered the three-month retreat, no monk went there except for the attendant monk Pindolabalabharadvaja, and on the days of the fortnightly recitation of the Pratimoksha. At that time, the venerable Nanda did not abandon the monthly alms and promised to stay in the rainy season dwelling. And the Blessed One abandoned the monthly alms and agreed to stay in the rainy season dwelling. Then, after the three rainy season months had passed, the venerable Nanda had made his Dharma robes, possessed finished Dharma robes, and was

Endowed with deportment, carrying his bowl and robes, he went to Shravasti, gradually walking and traveling, and eventually arrived in Shravasti. Then, the venerable Upali put down his bowl and robes, washed his feet, and went to the Blessed One's monastery. The group of six monks saw the venerable Upali from afar. Having seen him, they said, "Venerable ones, now he will cause trouble in the Sangha's law at a time when there is little to do." Others said, "He will make that one commit an offense that leads to downfall." Still others said, "Now he is engaging in the effort; when he causes trouble, then he will make that one commit it." Then, the venerable Upali gently knocked on the latch of the Blessed One's monastery. The Blessed One opened the door for him. Then, the venerable Upali bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. It is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, to greet a monk who has come suddenly with, "Monk, where have you come from now? Where did you promise to spend the summer retreat?" Because this makes them rejoice individually, the Blessed One greeted the venerable Upali in the same way, saying, "Upali, where have you come from now? Where did you promise to spend the summer retreat?" The venerable Upali replied, "Venerable one, I have come from the border region. I promised to spend the summer retreat in the border region." "Upali, did the monks in the border region perform the karmas?" "Venerable one, they did." "Upali, what is the cause and what is the condition that you have become so beautiful and endowed with such deportment?" "Venerable one, if I had someone to rely on when I first went forth, I would say to him, 'Good sir, come here, look for a monastery,' and I would praise the monastery itself. 'Look for an alms seeker, the three robes, a duster to wipe away dust, and a tree dweller,' and I would praise the tree dweller himself. If I were to do that...

If he says so, he should be greatly praised. If (someone) says he wants to take full ordination, wants to enter a residence, wants to start reciting, wants to start discussing, wants to start thinking, he should say to him: 'Good man, come here, look for a monastery,' saying so, and praising the monastery itself. 'Look for a beggar, one who has three robes, one who holds a duster, one who lives under a tree,' saying so, and praising the one who lives under a tree itself. Dear relatives, here, I say to the monks: 'Monks, during these three months, you should settle down properly.
