One should abstain from worldly pleasures and peaks. Prince, come hither. Also, fully enjoy the dwellings you desire. Also, give alms. Also, accumulate merit. Having said this, the wealthy son remained silent. Then, the attendants of the wealthy son went to where the parents of the wealthy son were, and having arrived, they said this to the parents of the wealthy son: Parents, please be aware. What good is it if the young and peaceful one dies? Renunciation is praised by the wise, so if he renounces and becomes very happy, you will see that he is still alive. Even if he does not become very happy, sages do return, so where else would a son go except to his parents? Therefore, renunciation is good. Then, the parents of the wealthy son said this to the wealthy son: Son, is it better for you to renounce, or is it better to stay at home? Parents, it is better for me to renounce, it is not better to stay at home. Son, now know that the time has come. Then, having been permitted by his parents, the wealthy son gradually increased his bodily strength, energy, and diligence by consuming rice porridge. Having emerged from sin, he went to where the venerable Aśvajit was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Aśvajit, and then sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the wealthy son said this to the venerable Aśvajit: Venerable one, please be aware. Having been permitted by my parents, I wish to renounce in the Dharma and Vinaya well-spoken by you, and to obtain the full ordination of a Bhikṣu. I wish to practice Brahmacharya in the presence of the venerable one. The venerable Aśvajit said: Well done, well done. Enjoyment is impermanent, renunciation is good, so do it that way. The Bhagavan also said that the wise should only be inclined to renounce after fully seeing five benefits. What are these five? I can follow my own benefit without confusion.

If a wise person correctly perceives what one gains through ordination, then one should only desire ordination; if a wise person correctly perceives that one becomes a slave to certain individuals, subject to their commands, instructions, lacking autonomy, and unable to go as one pleases, then one should only desire ordination, because ordination leads to receiving offerings and praise; if a wise person correctly perceives that through ordination one attains accomplishment and the unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana, then one should only desire ordination; if a wise person correctly perceives that even if one falls from the attainment of accomplishment and the unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana, one will still be reborn among the gods, then one should only desire ordination; if a wise person correctly perceives that ordination is praised in numerous ways by the Buddhas, the noble Shravakas of the Buddhas, those who have correctly realized, those who have correctly practiced, and the noble beings, then one should only desire ordination. Thus it was said, so ordain! Then, the venerable Ashvajit, having ordained and fully ordained the son of a noble family, Gya-bu Nor, said: Son, there are two tasks for a Bhikshu: meditation and reading. Which do you prefer, meditation or reading? Gya-bu Nor said: Abbot, I will do both; I will read during the day and meditate at night. The venerable Ashvajit said: Son, do so! Then, the venerable Gya-bu Nor, by reading and reciting during the day, became proficient in the three Pitakas. By meditating at night, he gained increasingly superior mental application, and recognized this very wheel of the five aggregates, both moving and unmoving, and having all conditioned phenomena overwhelmed by the nature of decay, decline, disintegration, and destruction, he abandoned all afflictions. Therefore, for what reason do noble sons shave their hair and beards, don the ochre robes, and with unwavering faith alone, go forth from household life into homelessness, pursuing that unsurpassed Brahmacharya?
