Those five hundred Brahmin boys who were allowed to read, when the group of six monks went to beg for alms, they asked again and again: "Hey, group of six monks, did you get the best food? Did you get the food first? Is your bowl full?" At that time, the group of six monks thought: "Under that tree, those Brahmin disciples always ask us: 'Hey, group of six monks, did you get the best food? Did you get the food first? Is your bowl full?' We should make them unhappy, cut down that tree, and build a temple there. That way, they won't ask us again in the future." So, they discussed it, took the Karshapanas, went to the street of hired workers, and said: "Good people, please accept the reward and work in the temple." They hired the workers in this way. The group of six monks tipped those workers, rubbed their bodies, and also rubbed their heads. Those workers were very happy and said: "Saints, please go and assign us work." The group of six monks said: "The work will come, please wait for a while." They stopped them temporarily in this way. After a while, the sun went down, and those workers said: "Saints, we are going back now, please give us today's wages." The group of six monks said: "You have done a lot of work, so you want wages?" Those workers said: "Saints, what did you order us to do that we didn't do? Good people, take the axe, adze, and hoe, and let's go to work." Those workers, together with the group of six monks, took the axe, adze, and hoe, and went to that tree. The group of six monks said: "Knowledgeable people, cut down this tree." Those workers said: "Saints, this is a sacred tree, do we have two heads? We won't cut it." "Miserly people, this land belongs to the king, and he has given us a promise that we can build a temple wherever we want, except for the royal palace. Who will..."

I will cut off your head. Cut it off without hesitation! They cut down that sacred tree, uprooted all the trees, and leveled the ground so that no one knew where that sacred tree was. The Six Groups began to examine that place with their eyes, (saying:) "Joyful One, Near Joyful One, in this place we shall build the Blessed One's perfumed chamber, in this place we shall make a gatehouse, in this place we shall make a fire chamber, in this place we shall make a suitable room, in this place we shall make a room for those who dwell nearby." They marked it and dug. The daily practice of those Brahmin boys was to take turns tapping at the sacred tree, wrapping it well, and smearing it with cow dung. When it was a Brahmin boy's turn, he got up early in the morning and went, but he did not see the sacred tree, so he came to the Abbot and said, "Abbot, the sacred tree is gone." The Brahmin said, "Hey, Brahmin boy, haven't you lost your way? Where did the other trees go at night?" Another Brahmin boy laughed with him and said, "Abbot, this Brahmin boy drank rice wine dregs last night, so he didn't see it." The Brahmin sent another of the smartest Brahmin boys, but he also did not see it, and he also came (to the Abbot) and said, "Abbot, it is just as it is, that sacred tree is not there at all." Then everyone gathered and dug, and they also did not see it. There was a Brahmin boy with a good memory who said, "In this direction, Abbot, you were reciting secret mantras, in this direction, if I use (my) body, what fault is there? I do not know what happened." As they were sitting there with doubts in their hearts, a man came and said, "Brahmins, why are you sitting there with your retinue with such doubts in your hearts? Alas, at first there was a sacred tree in this direction, but the other trees do not know where they went at night. Brahmin, I last night…

If it has not been interrupted, then, if one sees the six groups here busy together with axes, adzes, and sickles, have they not cut it down? The Brahmin said, 'Yes, Inner One, that is so.' When they understood and abided in their minds in this way, the six groups arrived and said, 'Brahmins, why do you understand and abide in your minds? Venerable ones, there was a tree here, but last night we do not know who cut it down.' The six groups began to laugh, and the Brahmin said, 'Venerable ones, did you not cut it down? You beggars, you always stay near it and ask us, 'Six groups, have you received the best alms? Have you received the first alms? Is your bowl full?' Therefore, you should be unhappy.' That is how the Śākya's son monks speak of their practice. That is how the Brahmins speak, like this, they slander, saying, 'Even this tree has been cut down.' They hiss, they revile. Through hearsay, the people living in Kauśāmbī, and those who arrived there living in other places, also heard, and they also slander, hiss, and revile in the streets, alleys, crossroads, and junctions, and those who do not believe do not even give alms to those who go for alms, at that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, as before. My hearers should proclaim the basis of learning in the discipline in this way: If a monk is to have a large monastery built for the sake of the monastic community, the monk should lead the monks to inspect the site. The monks who are led should also inspect the site to see if it is suitable, without dispute, and can be started. If the monk finds that the site is unsuitable, or disputed, or unsuitable to start, but wants to build a large monastery for the sake of the monastic community.
