Is this house the dwelling of musicians? Or the dwelling of prostitutes? The dwelling of tavern women? The dwelling of outcasts? Or the king's palace? Why do you prevent me? The gatekeeper said: Venerable one, you will be greatly blamed. This is not the dwelling of musicians, nor the dwelling of prostitutes, nor the dwelling of tavern women, nor the dwelling of outcasts, nor the king's palace. Rather, this is the house of a certain Brahmin. Ardent thought: Where even a brief meeting is not possible, what else could there be? Thinking thus, he stood at the gate. While pondering in his heart, a householder's son was born, and twelve people gathered together, engaging in joyful dance, song, and music. The gatekeeper began to examine them for weapons, not watching the gate. The venerable Ardent gained entry. Having entered, the Brahmin saw him purifying the place free from desire with his conduct and said: Venerable Ardent, welcome! Please sit on this seat. Ardent sat down, and not finding an opportunity to speak, said: Brahmin, I have obtained a small amount of alms flour, please allow me to sift it and give it to me. The Brahmin instructed his daughter: Daughter, gather the venerable one's alms flour and offer it. The daughter began to sift, and the venerable Ardent began to examine the flour. The Brahmin said: Venerable one, what are you looking for? Living beings? If there are any, what should be done? It should not be eaten. If it is eaten, what fault is there? Brahmin, the Bhagavan has completely forbidden the taking of life. Repeatedly taking life will cause the body to be destroyed, and after death, one will be born in the lower realms, evil destinies, places of downfall, and hells. Even if one is born among humans, one will have a short life. Thus, he extensively described the paths of the ten non-virtuous and ten virtuous actions. The Brahmin became deeply devoted and, having prepared clean food and drink himself, filled the vessel with merit and said: Venerable one, for the sake of compassion, please accept this.

Please be patient. The venerable Aranya thought: If I accept it, like boiling something in a wooden vessel, this beginning of mine will turn into an end. Realizing this, he said: Brahmin, I have found this small amount of alms powder, let me enjoy it all. How can I discard what I have accepted as a donation of faith? The Brahmin said: Holy one, the custom of us Brahmins is that if we find something bad and then find something good, we discard the bad and enjoy the good. What harm is there in that for you? We Brahmins are those who truly accept the precepts, but you Brahmins are not those who truly accept the precepts, so you Brahmins can do as you please. We have the four noble lineages taught by the Blessed One. Which four? Being content with any Dharma garment is a noble lineage, being content with any alms is a noble lineage, being content with any dwelling is a noble lineage, and delighting in abandonment and delighting in meditation are noble lineages. That Brahmin became very devout and said: Holy one, this is your residence, please visit at any time. Brahmin, this gatekeeper of yours is like the staff of Yama, do not let anyone enter, and admonish him well. Then he will not stop me. The Brahmin called the gatekeeper and admonished him well: Hey, attendant, this house belongs to the holy Aranya, do not stop him. Also admonish the family members, you must not be disrespectful to the holy Aranya. The venerable Aranya thought: This Brahmin has become very devout, but if that black-bowled one enters here, he will surely disturb this place, I must think of a way. Then, Aranya said to the gatekeeper: Hey, attendant, did you see how devout that Brahmin is to me? Holy one, I saw it. Therefore, only allow me to enter here, do not let any other black-bowled one enter. If there is a bowl here
