Seventh, explaining the remaining monasteries of the Sangha. Seventh, explaining the remaining monasteries of the Sangha. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Ghoṣitārāma in Kauśāmbī. The group of six monks were dwelling in monasteries that others had caused to be built, and while dwelling there, delighted and near to delight, they would say: "Look, this monastery has become dilapidated! This has cracked! This has violated the boundary! This has damaged the surface! This is like the house of a yakṣiṇī!" They would mock in this way. The monks said to them: "Venerable ones, you dwell for a while in monasteries that others have caused to be built, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock!" After they had spoken thus, they became filled with pride and began to speak to each other: "Delighted and near to delight, these black-bowl monks say to us: 'You dwell for a while in monasteries that others have caused to be built, and you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock!' They say this with great contempt. What kind of monastery shall we have built, since we have never had any black-bowl monks build a monastery before? If we all strive with our hands, these black-bowl monks are always seeking an opportunity with us, and they will also find an opportunity to say: 'The group of six monks have all begun to strive with their hands!' We will also follow them, criticizing the faults of those who are in the houses of beggars. We must definitely find someone among us who is wise in conduct and able to insert a peg into a hole, and we must express our desire to that person. Therefore, who among us is wise in conduct and able to insert a peg into a hole? The venerable Araṇya among us is wise in conduct and able to insert a peg into a hole. We must express our desire to that person." They went to Araṇya and said: "Venerable Araṇya, these black-bowl monks say to us: 'You dwell for a while...'

Living in temples built by others, you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock us, thus greatly belittling us. We think thus: These black-bowl ones say to us, you temporarily live in temples built by others, you cannot even lift a stone, yet you mock us, thus greatly belittling us, get out! We will build a temple such as no black-bowl one has ever built before. If we all strive to work with our hands, those black-bowl ones will always find fault with us, and they will also find an opportunity to say that the group of six monks all participated in manual labor. Those families from whom we beg for alms will also find fault with our faults and then accuse us. We must find among us someone who is skilled in affairs and can pass a hammer through the eye of a needle, and then we can entrust the matter to him with peace of mind. Therefore, who among us is skilled in affairs and can pass a hammer through the eye of a needle? Among us, the Venerable Upali is skilled in affairs and can pass a hammer through the eye of a needle. We should entrust the matter to him with peace of mind. We should ask the Venerable for the sake of the temple and request you to suppress those black-bowl ones with this method. Upali said: This is a good method, let's do it that way. They happily agreed. The Venerable Upali also washed his feet outside the temple, entered the temple and sat down, thinking: What method can be used to allow the Sangha to build the temple? He began to think about who is most devout to whom. He thought thus: Now, the world, including the gods, is very devout to the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, Sanskrit, भगवान्, bhagavān, The Blessed One). So-and-so wealthy family is very devout to the Venerable Kaundinya, so-and-so wealthy family is very devout to the Venerable Mahakasyapa.

Because they have great faith in them, they cannot be put together. For example, there was a wealthy Brahmin in Kausambi who had a lot of wealth, enjoyed great possessions, was completely possessed, and was vast and extensive. But he was stingy and narrow-eyed, not even giving food to crows, and possessing all the utensils. He had a lot of wealth and gold. If he could be persuaded, the monastery of the Sangha could be built. Thinking this, he spent a lot of effort to make it dawn. In the morning, he put on his lower garment, took his bowl and robes, and went to Kausambi to beg for alms. He begged for alms in two or three houses, took a small amount of flour, and tried to enter the Brahmin's house, but the gatekeeper stopped him, saying, "Venerable, please stay, do not enter." He said, "Good-looking one, the Blessed One has said that there are five places that are not our domain: the house of musicians, the house of prostitutes, the house of liquor, the house of outcastes, and the palace of the king."
