Then those rays circumambulated the Blessed One three times and disappeared into the Blessed One's navel. Then, the Venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Venerable, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas do not smile without a cause, without a condition. Venerable, what is the cause of the smile? What is the condition?" He also spoke in verses: With a thousand splendors of various colors, The assemblies arise from the face, It illuminates all directions, Like an unfolded sunshade. Free from arrogance and timidity, completely abandoning pride, The Buddha is the supreme cause for beings, The Victorious One, the subduer of enemies, without a cause, Does not show teeth as white as conch shells. Therefore, knowing the time with your own wisdom, The Able One, the best of the assembly, the ascetic, the lord of beings, To the listeners who possess intelligence, Please dispel the doubts that have arisen with your firm words, And dispel them with sacred goodness. Steadfast like the Ganges River, The Buddha protectors do not smile suddenly. Please listen, why the Blessed One smiles, And for what reason he shows the smile to the assembly of beings. The Blessed One said: "Ananda, it is so, it is so. Ananda, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas do not smile without a cause, without a condition. Ananda, go and tell the monks, 'Monks, the Tathagata wishes to go to the Ganges River. Whoever among you is willing to go to the Ganges River with the Tathagata, prepare your Dharma robes.'" The Venerable Ananda, having heard from the Blessed One, said to the monks: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One wishes to go to the Ganges River. Whoever among you is willing to go to the Ganges River with the Blessed One, prepare your Dharma robes." 《Vinaya-vibhaṅga》, Twelfth Chapter. Then, the Blessed One is the tamer, with a retinue of tamed ones; the peaceful one, with a retinue of peaceful ones; the liberated one, with a retinue of liberated ones; the one who has exhaled, with a retinue of those who have exhaled.

Along with the great and renowned ones, the non-regressing ones, Śāriputra, Maudgalyāyana, Kāśyapa, Ānanda, নৌ嘎嘎, and other great Śrāvakas, surrounded by a large Saṃgha of monks, they traveled to the delightful river. From afar, that retinue saw the Blessed One with the Śrāvaka Saṃgha. Having seen him, some who were without faith said, "The ascetic Gautama is devoid of amusement. Now he has developed a desire for amusement and has come to see the aquatic creatures, the nāgas and fish." Those with faith said to those without faith, "Wise ones, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are solely devoid of amusement. Starting with the aquatic creatures, the nāgas and fish, the Blessed One will surely wish to teach a small portion of rare and wonderful Dharma to the great assembly of beings." They also said, "The capable one possesses the intention of being devoid of amusement. Without amusement, he speaks meaningless words of evil birth. This Victorious One, diligent in benefiting others, has surely come here to benefit sentient beings." Then, having seen the Blessed One, that retinue immediately arose. Thus, the Blessed One, when he was previously a Bodhisattva, would arise for his father, mother, preceptor, teacher, guru, and the position of guru. Then the Blessed One went into the midst of that retinue and sat on the seat prepared before the Saṃgha of monks. Having sat, the Blessed One spoke to those five hundred fishermen, "Good sirs, for a time you are engaged in evil deeds. Therefore, you are now born into the lowly family of fishermen, and you are now violent, your hands stained with blood, attached to decline and great decline, taking the lives of others, and making a living by killing. If you die from this, what will your destination be? What will your birth be? What will your future life be?" They replied: "Blessed One, what should we do? Please instruct us." The Blessed One said, "Killing fish, turtles, frogs, young crocodiles, and fish-dogs, etc., from the water...
