Explaining the fourth defeat. Explaining the fourth defeat. The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in the multi-storied mansion on the bank of the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. At that time, five hundred fishermen were relying on and living by the delightful river. They had two women named "Conduct" and "Great Conduct." Sometimes they would let "Conduct" enter, and sometimes they would let "Great Conduct" enter. When there were no fish to buy, they would let "Conduct" enter; when there were fish to buy, they would let "Great Conduct" enter. At another time, a festival occurred in Vaishali, and they let both women enter. Two hundred and fifty let "Conduct" enter, and two hundred and fifty let "Great Conduct" enter. Those who let "Conduct" enter killed fish, turtles, frogs, and baby crocodiles, and many fish-dogs, etc., and arranged them in large piles like sesame seeds, rice porridge, Chinese firs, and Chinese beans. Those who let "Great Conduct" enter caught a huge crocodile fish that had entered the delightful river from the great ocean, and they began to drag it. As they dragged it, it woke up and, taking those two hundred and fifty fishermen and "Great Conduct" with it, entered the river. Those fishermen said to the other two hundred and fifty fishermen, "Wise ones, take 'Great Conduct' and us and block the way!" When they heard this, the other two hundred and fifty fishermen also came and gathered there. But it took the five hundred fishermen and "Great Conduct" with it and entered the river, and they could not catch it. Those helpless ones cried out everywhere, "Wise ones, take 'Great Conduct' and us and help us, block the way!" And those cowherds, shepherds, wood gatherers, grass gatherers, those who lived by the road, those who lived by getting lost, and other hundreds and thousands of beings turned back.

Sa. Those who reviled the body and reviled in various ways, with disheveled hair and extremely disheveled hair, dragged that crocodile from the water to the shore. It had eighteen heads and thirty-six eyes. Its heads, some resembling the head of an elephant, some resembling the head of a horse, some resembling the head of a peacock, the head of a donkey, the head of a cow, the head of a monkey, the head of a lion, the head of a tiger, the head of a bear, the head of a female bear, the head of an owl, the head of a cat, the head of a goat, the head of a sheep, the head of a deer, the head of a buffalo, the head of a pig, and the head of a dog. In short, in a place with a delightful river, five hundred fishermen, entering a delightful river from the great ocean, a huge crocodile fish was caught by a woman with great conduct, dragged from the water to the shore, and the news spread that it had eighteen heads and thirty-six eyes. Hearing this news, hundreds of thousands of creatures gathered on the bank of the delightful river. Some were curious, and some were driven by past roots of virtue. The six teachers, headed by the Perfect One, those who resided in the vast place, were also curious and came there. The large crowd was also amazed and stared intently. Knowledgeable people said, 'This one's head, some resemble the head of an elephant,' and then began to contemplate. 'Its head, some resemble the head of a dog,' and then began to contemplate. At that time, for the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, there was nothing unknown, nothing unseen, nothing uncomprehended, and not even a little bit of incomplete understanding. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, possessed great compassion, resided for the benefit of the world, were the sole protectors, the sole heroes, without a second, did not speak of duality, resided in shamatha and vipassana, clearly manifested the three knowledges, well-trained in the three trainings, skilled in the basis of the three disciplines, crossed the four rivers, well-established in the basis of acting with the four miraculous feet, having long practiced the four objects of gathering, unshaken by the four fearlessnesses.
