Some said: No elder, whether fully abiding, or fundamentally fully abiding, whether causing joy, or fundamentally causing joy, should be abandoned. Like this, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, having fallen into a transgression, is splitting the Blessed One's teaching, and does not live by the black bowl. Therefore, he falsely promises superior human qualities and communicates omniscience, and if he has not attained the fruit, he burns the places of enjoyment, and we will not obtain alms either. He does not properly confess the transgression he has committed, and in order not to see him commit transgressions, we will perform the act of expelling him from the community. Venerable ones, it is not proper to disrespect the elder monk in this way. This Buddha, the Blessed One, is all-knowing, all-seeing, possessing unsurpassed power in knowledge and wisdom, and able to cut off all doubts, so go to him now and ask about this matter! As the Blessed One instructs you, accept it exactly as it is! At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, it is so, it is so. That warm water only comes from the great unheated ocean. The monks reported: Blessed One, if that water comes from the great unheated ocean, why is it warm? The Blessed One said: Monks, it is because that water comes from above five hundred hells of hot beings. If you also ask the monk Maudgalyāyana about this, the monk Maudgalyāyana will also explain it in this way. Monks, there is no transgression for the monk Maudgalyāyana to explain with such understanding. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍada's park. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the monks: Venerable ones, as I was absorbed in the sphere of nothingness, I heard the sound of many great elephant leaders by the side of a slowly flowing pond. At that time, the venerable Ānanda was also with the community, and harmoniously...

Then Udāyi said: Venerable ones, do not harm the limits of the sūtras! Do not disturb the guidance of the Dharma! Do not tear open the womb of the Dharma! Even if we do not have realization, do we not even have scriptural authority? The Blessed One has said that having entered the sphere of nothingness, one has destroyed the perception of form and is separated from the perception of sound. Therefore, how can one who has destroyed the perception of form and is separated from the perception of sound see forms and hear sounds? That is impossible. You do not live by begging with a black bowl, therefore you proclaim omniscience, and that is also fruitless. You have burned the field of practice, and we cannot even find alms. Restore the offense you have committed according to the Dharma! Venerable one, the offense has not been seen! The group of six said: Venerable ones, the Blessed One has said that because the offense has not been seen, an act of expulsion should be performed. Therefore, why should we be particularly tolerant of this? Who is the steward? So-and-so. Call him! He has been called. Venerable one, strike the gavel! Because Maudgalyāyana, the son of the frugal one, does not restore the offense according to the Dharma, he should be expelled because the offense has not been seen. The steward went to the residence of the Saṃgha, and the group of six also went with him. At that time, the Venerable Śāriputra was the resident of the Saṃgha. When he always struck the gavel, he would ask in a manner befitting the Dharma: Venerable ones, who? Is it a resident or a new resident? Is it a satisfied one or a newly satisfied one? Is it a giver? The group of six said: Resident, no one is a resident, nor a new resident, nor satisfied, nor newly satisfied, nor a giver. In this way, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana argues about offenses and destroys the teachings of the Blessed One. He does not live by begging with a black bowl, therefore he claims to be superior among men and proclaims omniscience, and that is also fruitless.

It turned into fire. That fire burned the place of use, and we could not even get alms. Because of the transgression he committed, we will not do it again according to the Dharma. In order not to see that transgression, we will carry out the act of expelling him from the residence. O you who have life, it is not appropriate to speak haughtily to the venerable monk like this. This Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the all-knowing, the all-seeing, the supreme master of knowledge and knowable things, the one who cuts off all doubts. Therefore, go to him today and ask him about this matter! Whatever the Bhagavan instructs you, hold it as it is! At that time, the monks reported to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said: Monks, it is so. It is so, the perception of form is destroyed by entering the sphere of nothingness, and being separated from the perception of sound, he whose perception of form is destroyed and separated from the perception of sound will not see forms, nor will he hear sounds, that is a place without residence. In this way, the monk Maudgalyayana has attained meditation, liberation, samadhi, and samapatti. He is one who quickly enters and arises from samapatti. He understands the mind in samapatti, but does not understand the mind arising from samapatti. Monks, the monk Maudgalyayana heard that sound when he arose from samapatti. Monks, there is no transgression for the monk Maudgalyayana to make a prediction with such a thought. There is no transgression for the beginner, the madman, the disturbed mind, and the dangers of the senses. The fourth pārājika is completed, all the pārājikas are completed. The fourth pārājika has been explained.
