And to those who dwell mixed together, afflictions also arise. If attachment arises for desire, and hatred arises universally in the continuum, have we not fallen into defeat? Come, let us go to where the venerable Ānanda is, and ask the venerable Ānanda about this matter. Whatever the venerable Ānanda will prophesy to us, we will take it just as it is. If we ask the venerable Ānanda about this matter, will the venerable one not say that we have fallen into defeat? Then the venerable Ānanda led many monks to where the Blessed One was, and when they arrived, they bowed their heads at the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, the Blessed One has established this basis of training for the hearers in the discipline: Again, whatever monk does not know and does not fully know, and does not practice the ultimate and noble human dharma, the distinction of attainment, knowledge and seeing, and touching, but claims to know this and see this, and then, wishing to be purified from the occurrence of that downfall, whether asked at another time or not, says this: Venerable ones, I knew what I did not know. He said, I saw what I did not see, and said that he spoke falsely and falsely. That monk is also defeated and should not remain. The Blessed One established this basis of training for the hearers in the discipline. Venerable ones, dwelling places, monasteries, forests, mountains, and border areas, these rely on a small reason for peace, holding their own characteristics. By contemplating worldly thoughts, they suppress afflictions, but do not know others. Come, let us not let dwelling places and monasteries arise universally in the continuum. Let these know each other, venerable ones. We

Having obtained it, our birth is exhausted, the pure conduct is established, the task is done, and we know that there is nothing else in this world. Come, let us abandon our dwelling places and monasteries, and enter the outskirts of villages. Having spoken thus, they abandoned their dwelling places and monasteries, and having entered the outskirts of villages, they repeatedly saw the realm of women, and also lived together with the novices of the Garden of Virtue, and also generated afflictions, generating desire for desire, and harmful thoughts arose in their minds. Did we not commit a defeat that has failed us? Thus, regret arose. Therefore, I should report this matter to the Blessed One, have they not committed a defeat that has failed? The Blessed One said: O Kundgawo, if not for arrogance. Thereafter, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, respect for learning, and the possession of the means for learning in various ways, and gave the monks teachings that were in accordance with them, that had more of their share, and that were in accordance with them, and said to the monks: O monks, thus, the former is the establishment, and this is the essence of the response. My disciples should recite the root of the training in the Vinaya as follows: Furthermore, if there is a monk who, without direct realization or complete knowledge, without having the Dharma of a superior person, the Dharma of a noble person, a special attainment, wisdom, vision, or tactile experience, claims to know this and see this, and later, he wants to purify the offense he has committed, whether asked or not asked at any time, he says: Venerable ones, I say that I know what I do not know, and I say that I see what I have not seen, speaking false and lying words, if not for arrogance, that monk has also committed a defeat and should not live together. Furthermore, if there is a monk, the so-called monk, that is, from the four monks, etc., the so-called meaning up to this point, it is not appropriate to establish the unmoving request and the four actions, that is, the one who has taken full ordination.

As before, up to "they regard as monks." Therefore, it is said, "What is a monk?" "Not directly knowing" refers to what is not directly known? That is, form is not directly known, nor are feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. "Not fully knowing" refers to what is not fully known? That is, form itself is not fully known, nor are feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. "Human Dharma" refers to the Dharma of humans, which is Nirvana. This is attainable by humans, but not by hermaphrodites, eunuchs, or bisexuals. What need is there to mention hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts? "Superior" means that for beings in the desire realm, the form realm is superior, and for beings in the form realm, the formless realm is superior. Alternatively, "Human Dharma" refers to the five obscurations. "Superior" refers to whatever abandons those obscurations. "End" refers to Nirvana. "Noble" refers to the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravakas. "Obtaining distinction" refers to the four fruits of the ascetic path, namely the fruit of stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, and Arhatship. "Knowing" refers to the four knowings, namely knowing suffering, knowing the origin, knowing cessation, and knowing the path. "Seeing" refers to the four seeings, namely seeing suffering, seeing the origin, seeing cessation, and seeing the path. "Dwelling in comfort" refers to the four Dhyanas, which arise from Samadhi, not from birth. "Non-existent" refers to the fact that its entity does not exist. "Thus non-existent" refers to self-nature. "This is known" refers to what is known? That is, knowing suffering, knowing the origin, knowing cessation, and knowing the path. "This is seen" refers to what is seen? That is, seeing the gods, the Nagas, and the Yakshas.
