Venerable ones, we had vowed to spend the summer retreat in comfort at Tepa in the fishing village, and we were not weary from begging for alms. It seems to be just as it is for the venerable ones, like this, because there is no rush in begging for alms, the complexion, skin, flesh, and blood have become full. Venerable ones, now there is a terrible famine, and it is difficult for beggars in solitary places to find food, and parents also find it difficult to give food to their children and worry about it, let alone beggars? If such a situation arises, then here, venerable ones, what is the reason why you are not busy begging for alms? What is the cause? Venerable ones, Ananda, we used to praise each other's merits in front of our relatives, saying: 'This monk has attained the perception of impermanence, the perception of suffering in impermanence, the perception of selflessness in suffering, the perception of displeasure with food, the perception of obvious dislike for all the world, the perception of faults, the perception of abandonment, the perception of detachment from desire, the perception of cessation, the perception of death, the perception of impurity, the perception of bluishness, the perception of putrefaction, the perception of decay, the perception of being eaten by worms, the perception of being eaten, the perception of being blood-red, the perception of being scattered, the perception of bones, and the perception of separately discerning white bones.' This monk has attained the first dhyana, the second dhyana, the third dhyana, the fourth dhyana, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, as well as the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, the realm of magical powers, divine hearing, knowing the minds of others, past lives, death and rebirth, and the exhaustion of defilements. This monk is an Arhat, a meditator on the eight liberations. This monk is two

Saying that they were liberated from what, they praised each other's virtues in this way. Is it true? Is it not true? It is not true. For the sake of a little gain, is it permissible for you to speak of a non-superior human quality as being present when it is not? It may be permissible, or it may not be permissible. Thus we have spoken. Monks, why do you, who are content with little, rebuke, slander, and mock the monks for saying that they possess a non-superior human quality when they do not, for the sake of a little gain? At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this circumstance, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the monks dwelling on the bank of the Delightful River: Monks, is it true that you have spoken of a non-superior human quality as being present when it is not, for the sake of a little gain? Venerable One, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciant should do. Monks, these three exist in the world, they are thieves of existence, great thieves. Which three? Monks, here a thief has a retinue of a hundred, or a retinue of a thousand, and he goes before the hundred or thousand and breaks into houses, does not untie knots, he goes before the hundred or thousand and breaks into houses, sets fires, destroys roads, steals the king's treasury, destroys villages, destroys cities, destroys countries. Monks, this exists in the world, it is the first great thief, a thief of existence. Monks, another thief, a great thief, does not have a retinue of a hundred, nor does he have a retinue of a thousand, and he goes before the hundred or thousand and does not break into houses, does not untie knots, does not plunder by force, the way...
