When those relatives came near, they began to praise each other's virtues to those relatives who had come near, saying: 'Relatives, those of you in whose villages such a monastic community of monks resides, having undertaken the summer retreat in such a place, those relatives have indeed obtained a great gain. Fourth, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, the realm of magical powers, the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, past lives, death and rebirth, and the attainment of the exhaustion of defilements. This monk is an Arhat, a meditator on the eight liberations. This monk is liberated from both parts. They said: Venerable ones, have you attained such a collection of merits? They replied: We have attained it. The world delights in merits, so for a while they even take away from their own sons and think of giving alms and deeds to them. The Buddha, the Blessed One, is alive and dwelling. For those who are alive, according to the Dharma, the assembly of the Shravakas has two great gatherings: one is on the fifteenth day of the middle summer month when the summer retreat is observed; the second is on the full moon day of the middle autumn month. Among them, those who receive instructions on the fifteenth day of the middle summer month when the summer retreat is observed, and promise to dwell in towns, villages, districts, and royal palaces, arrive on the full moon day of the middle autumn month and speak of what they have attained. Those who have not attained it inquire further in order to attain it. Then, those monks who had promised to dwell in the forest near the city of Vaishali, after spending the three summer months, were dressed in Dharma robes, holding Dharma robes, emaciated, weak, haggard, dry, and without having obtained nourishment, they took their bowls and Dharma robes and went to the city of Light. As they gradually walked and arrived at the city of Light, the venerable Ananda saw those very many monks from afar. Having seen them, being pleased with those who practiced the same Brahma conduct, he greeted them with friendly words as a friend, and took their bowls and Dharma robes.

I take the staff, the crozier, the rosary, the ghee container, the hat and boots, and slippers, and also say this: O you who have life, please come, it is good to come! O you who have life, from where have you come here now? Where did you promise to stay in summer? O venerable Ananda, we have come here from the village of abandonment. We have promised to stay in the village of abandonment in summer. O venerable ones, how did you manage to stay comfortably in the village of abandonment in summer? Were you not tired from begging for alms? O venerable Ananda, although we stayed comfortably in the village of abandonment, we were tired from begging for alms. O venerable ones, it seems that is the case. Like this, because of the busyness of begging for alms, they have become thin, weak, with dry necks and bodies, without strength in their bodies, and with reduced skin, flesh, and blood. Those monks who promised to stay near the village of fishermen, after those three months of summer had passed, possessed Dharma robes, had Dharma robes, and with increased fat, skin, flesh, and blood, carrying their bowls and Dharma robes, wandering in the village called Light, gradually wandering when they wanted to go, they arrived at the village of Light. The venerable Ananda saw those very many monks from a very far distance. Having seen them, because he was pleased with those who behaved like Brahma, he greeted them with friendly words, taking their bowls and Dharma robes, staffs, croziers, rosary, ghee container, hats and boots, and slippers, and also said this: O you who have life, please come, it is good to come! O you who have life, from where have you come here now? Where did you promise to stay in summer? O venerable Ananda, we promised to stay in summer.
