Relying on you, I have obtained flawless and pure eyes today, and have obtained the joy of the peaceful and noble position, and have crossed the ocean of suffering. Beings, gods, non-gods, humans, and gods make offerings, those who are free from birth, old age, sickness, and death, it is very rare to see the emptiness of existence, today I have the fruit of seeing you, the capable one. Then, after bowing and hanging down the necklace, prostrating at the feet and generating joy, having completely circumambulated from the right, he went to the sky facing the manifest world of the gods. Then, like a son of a water monster god, like a merchant who has gained profit, like a farmer who has a rich harvest, like a hero who has completely won from the battlefield, and like a sick person who has completely escaped from all diseases, with whatever attire he came before the Blessed One, he returned to his own place with that same attire. Monks, those who do not sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, but diligently abide in the practice of yoga, they see the vast light pervading before the Blessed One. Having seen this, with a mind of doubt, when the night dawned, they asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is it? Last night, did the master of the three thousand worlds, Brahma, or the lord of the gods, Indra, or the four guardians of the world, or a son of the gods who is wealthy and powerful, come near to see the Blessed One? The Blessed One said: Monks, it is not that Brahma, the master of the three thousand worlds, came near to see me, nor is it Indra, the lord of the gods, nor are the four guardians of the world, nor is it another son of the gods who is wealthy and powerful. Monks, have you seen how I taught the three-sentence Dharma to the aquatic fish? Blessed One, we have seen it. Monks, he died from there and was reborn among the gods of the Four Great Kings, and he came to me last night, and after I taught him the Dharma, he saw the truth and returned to his own place. Again, the monks asked the Blessed One: Venerable, what deeds did the son of the water monster god do in the past that he was reborn among the gods of the Four Great Kings? What deeds did he do that he

May I see the truth before my eyes. The Blessed One said: Monks, in the past, the son of the water god himself accumulated karma, and as the conditions change, it will come near. The unfed fruit will also appear, all because of what he did and accumulated. Who else will bear the consequences of the deeds done and accumulated by the son of the water god in the past? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, nor will they ripen in the realm of fire, nor will they ripen in the realm of wind, nor will they ripen in the realm of wind. Thus, the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Karma, even through hundreds of thousands of kalpas, Will not be wasted, but when conditions and time meet, For sentient beings, It will surely ripen into fruit. Monks, there is also karma that is experienced after birth, and there is also karma that is experienced many times. What is the karma that is experienced after birth? That is, when this (water god) became a water god, he developed great faith in me. This is called the karma that is experienced after birth. As a result of this ripening, he was born among the gods of the Four Great Kings. What is the karma that is experienced many times? That is, the good man became a monk in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector, and studied chanting, mastering the aggregates, realms, sources, dependent origination, and what is and is not the place. This is called the karma that is experienced many times. Because of the power of that karma, he is now a god and has been able to see the truth before my eyes. Monks, thus, the result of purely black karma is purely black, the result of purely white karma is purely white, and the result of mixed karma is also mixed. Monks, therefore, you should abandon purely black karma and mixed karma, and diligently cultivate purely white karma. Monks, you

Thus should it be taught. Having spoken thus, the Blessed One, those monks greatly praised what was spoken by the Blessed One. The Vinaya-vibhaṅga, Volume Thirteen. Then, those five hundred sons of good family thought to themselves: 'Learned ones, for a while, that lay preacher of the Dharma has become one who possesses the three baskets, and has the courage of knowledge and liberation. Having filled the ear-cavities of hundreds of thousands of living beings, if one is born badly as an animal due to merely verbal misconduct, what will become of the destiny of us who have passed away from here? What will become of our birth? What will become of our future life? If we are not born into a low family, we should also go forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and for the sake of crossing over the rivers and completely passing beyond the bonds, we should rejoice, strive, and exert ourselves.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, is alive and dwells, and the nature of those who live and dwell is that, out of compassion for beings who have become disciplined, three times during the day and three times during the night, he looks upon the world with the eye of a Buddha. The great Śrāvakas are also the same. When the venerable Śāriputra looked upon the world with the eye of a Śrāvaka, he saw those five hundred sons of good family very dejected, with their cheeks resting on their hands, sitting with their minds full of sorrow. Having seen them, he went to where those five hundred sons of good family were, and having arrived, he said to them: 'Good sirs, why are you sitting with your cheeks resting on your hands, with your minds full of sorrow?' They replied: 'Venerable one, it is like this, that lay preacher of the Dharma has become one who possesses the three baskets, and has the courage of knowledge and liberation, and he has filled the ear-cavities of hundreds of thousands of living beings. Merely because of verbal misconduct, one is born as an animal.'
