said. The abbot said: Child, what is the danger? Abbot, my brother went to Depo and said: Is that a fearless city? I will also go there and impose a great punishment on him. Thus, although our king has completely abandoned the young man, because I have made a mistake, if I am harmed here as well, I will flee. Child, where are you going? Abbot, to Rajagriha. Child, there is a monk who is my friend there, send him a letter, stay with him, and he will take care of you with compassion. Abbot, good. He first asked about the injury of that monk, saying: I will send my companion to you, and for him, take care of him with compassion as if it were manifest joy. After writing the letter, the attendant received the letter, and because he was afraid, he was uneasy and looked around, went to Rajagriha, and finally arrived in Rajagriha. Through inquiries, he found the monk, bowed his head to his feet, offered the letter, and then sat silently aside. Then, that monk read the letter and said: O long-lived one, welcome! Welcome! Just as you are his attendant, you are also mine, and you must respectfully study, and I will not bother you with alms bowls, robes, nets, bowls, and belts. In addition, there are two kinds of affairs for monks: meditation and reading. Do you prefer meditation or reading? I prefer meditation. Child, very good! He gave him teachings, and the attendant went to the Cool Grove charnel ground, and through diligence, effort, and exertion, he abandoned all defilements and attained the state of Arhat. Arhat, liberated from desire from the three realms, with a mind that is equal to dung and gold, the same as the sky and the palm of the hand, like placed sandalwood, wisdom broke open the eggshell, and obtained wisdom and supernatural powers, as well as individual correct knowledge, having

turning their backs on gains and honors. They are to be worshiped, forgotten, and openly spoken of by the gods with power and attendants. In the meantime, Devadatta also went to the Jeta Grove and asked the monks: "Venerable ones, is there a son of a householder from Shravasti who has renounced here?" They replied: "He has renounced." "Where is he?" They replied: "He has gone to Rajagriha." "What is his relationship to you?" They replied: "He is our brother." Devadatta bowed at the feet of those monks and left, thinking: "Rajagriha is not a fearless city either, I will go there too, and I will inflict a great punishment on him." So, he took a lot of travel expenses and karshapanas and went to Rajagriha. He went to the Bamboo Grove and asked the monks: "Venerable ones, is there a son of a householder from Shravasti who has renounced here?" They replied: "He has come here." "What is his relationship to you?" They replied: "He is our brother." "Where is he?" They replied: "In the charnel ground of the Cool Grove." Devadatta went to the charnel ground of the Cool Grove, and he had seen Nanda become very famous in his childhood. Although he could not recognize him by wisdom and suppression, he recognized him by his figure and appearance. He thought: "If he recognizes me, he will surely kill me, so I must devise a way to deal with it." So, he went to one side and sat looking around. After a while, a hunter came to the road with a bow and arrow in his hand to hunt wild animals. Devadatta went to him and said: "Friend, where are you going with a bow and arrow in your hand?" The hunter said: "Friend, to hunt wild animals." "How much gain do you get from it?" "Friend, sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't." "When you get it, how much is it?" "Friend, about five hundred karshapanas." Devadatta said: "Friend, if so, kill this renunciate, and I will give you five hundred karshapanas." The hunter, driven by desire, took the five hundred karshapanas from Devadatta, and then thought: "These renunciates are

King Endowed with Beauty granted the youth complete renunciation. I always wander in this direction. If I were to kill this renunciate, I, along with my sons, relatives, and livestock, would surely be imprisoned and killed. This householder, like the appearance of a white nālī flower, no one knows where he came from. By all means, he must be killed. Thinking thus, the hunter, with a poisoned arrow, drew the bowstring to his ear, like the shape of a rainbow, and shot it into the vital spot of Sdepa. Sdepa, afflicted by feelings of suffering, thought, 'Whoever has killed me, surely this renunciate has conspired with this hunter. I will take birth where he will be killed.' Cherishing such thoughts, he made a perverse aspiration and was born as a snake with rapidly spreading venom under the threshold of Nyésdé's dwelling. Arhats possess knowledge without thought and are not subject to being seen. When Nyésdé opened the door, the snake with rapidly spreading venom died. Then, he was born on the threshold and died there as well. Then, he was born under one of the legs of a throne and died there as well. Likewise, he was born underneath two, three, four times and died there as well. The more he died, the more potent the venom became, and the more subtle the body became, thus taking rebirth continuously. Some time later, he was born between the grass mats above. Then, the venerable Nyésdé, alone, went to a secluded place and, having entered into meditation, his body fell. Then, the venerable Nyésdé said to the monks, 'Venerable ones, a snake venom is rapidly spreading through my body, burning, sharp, and extremely poisonous. It is falling like a fine eye-ointment stick. O venerable ones, grasp my body by the waist and, without letting it scatter like chaff, throw it outside the monastery.' At that time, the venerable Śāriputra,
