Explanation of the Third Defeat. Explanation of the Third Defeat. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, Volume Eight. General summary of the third defeat: Servitude, self, poison, corpses, and bathhouses. Summary: Servitude and care, beaked creatures and śirika, begging bowls and robes, those in the womb, and merchants. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. In Śrāvastī, there were two monks called Servant and Caregiver, who were conversing with each other, speaking of going, mentioning companionship, and expressing agreement. At some other time, Caregiver became ill, and Servant was attending to him. Caregiver began to make noises at night, and Servant said, "Venerable Caregiver, why are you making noises?" Caregiver said, "I am hungry! I am thirsty!" Servant said, "Venerable Caregiver, keep the mind of a renunciant close. Even if there were medicine now, there is no strength to give or take. What need is there to mention medicine for you? There is none." Because Caregiver did not have individual discernment, he kept making noises, "I am thirsty! I am hungry!" When morning came, Servant said, "Venerable Caregiver, wait while I ask the doctor and come back. For now, fetch a toothbrush." Servant went to the doctor and said, "Show me a medicine that is suitable for a handsome young man who is ill." The doctor said, "Venerable monk, the medicine for him is such and such." While Servant was gone to the doctor, Venerable Caregiver got up from his bed, put on his lower garment, took cleansing earth, a water pot, and a toothbrush, and went to the courtyard and began to throw away the toothbrush. Then the monks said to him, "Venerable Caregiver, why are you making noises at night?" Caregiver said, "Venerable ones, I am thirsty and hungry!" Then a monk said, "Venerable Caregiver, why don't you drink if I have some rice gruel?" Caregiver said, "I will drink it without fault."

Then he drank those things. The other monks said: If we had milk porridge, yogurt porridge, fruit, meat, and offerings, why wouldn't we eat them? The attendant saw that those monks were guarding the Brahmacharya, and because of greed, they were enjoying it little by little, and they ate too much, so they vomited and lay down. The attendant went to ask the doctor, and then quickly returned, and the doctor prescribed medicine, saying: O blessed provider, please enjoy, bring a toothpick. The provider said: Already thrown away. The attendant said: It's okay, then he smeared the mandala, wiped the container and mouthwash, and said: Please enjoy, drink. The provider guarded those things, and then stood up. The attendant let him take the medicine and handed it to him, and the provider drank two or three mouthfuls with the mouthwash, then vomited and lay down. The attendant said: O blessed provider, why don't you eat? The provider said: I don't want to. The attendant said: You kept saying at night that I was hungry, I was thirsty, and kept bothering me, but now you say you don't want to, now is the time. The monks said to the attendant: O blessed attendant, pay attention to this person. He drank our water porridge, milk porridge, and yogurt porridge, and ate fruit, meat, and offerings. The attendant said: O blessed provider, did you really do that? The provider, feeling guilty, said with a guilty conscience: I did. The attendant said: I have worn out the bowl, worn out the robes, and declined in the aspect of virtue, and still take care of your illness, but you do such bad things, you would rather eat poison, you shouldn't eat so discordantly. The provider felt ashamed and said: I say guarding the Brahmacharya is good, this person has worn out the bowl, worn out the robes, and declined in the aspect of virtue, and still takes care of my illness, but I do such bad things, I would rather eat poison, I shouldn't do such discordant things, I would rather eat poison, thinking like this, he stood up and began to inspect the containers, and found poison in the sugar jar.

Seeing a piece of poison, he ate it. He became delirious from the poison and began to die, drooling, his eyes rolling, and his face changing, saying, 'Servant, I am going to die!' He kept saying, 'I am going to die.' The servant heard this and said firmly and quickly, 'Venerable one, caretaker, why are you crying out like that?' The caretaker said, 'You say, Venerable one, caretaker, I am exhausting my alms bowl, wearing out my robes, diminishing my virtuous deeds, and caring for your illness. Are you so displeased that you have eaten poison? Have you eaten something so displeasing?' He said, 'I would rather be called someone who practices the same Brahmacharya as me.' 'If I exhaust my alms bowl, wear out my robes, diminish my virtuous deeds, and care for your illness, am I so displeased that I have eaten poison? Have I eaten something so displeasing?' Then the thought arose in me, 'I will eat poison,' and I began to examine my container. Seeing a piece of poison in the molasses container, I ate it. The servant said with a disappointed face, 'Venerable one, you have done wrong!' Having said that, he went to find a doctor. Because the poison was so potent, it could not be controlled, so he (the caretaker) passed away. The servant brought the doctor, and seeing that he had already passed away, he regretted it, thinking, 'Did I cause him to die?' He told this matter to the monks. The monks reported it to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Monks, that monk has not committed an offense.' Furthermore, 'If a monk hears something that he says to a sick person that would cause the sick person to die, he should not say such a thing.' 'If a monk hears something that he says to a sick person that would cause the sick person to die, if he says such a thing, he will commit a serious offense.' This event only happened temporarily, and the Buddha, the Blessed One, will not establish a training rule for the Shravakas because of it. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Jeta Grove in Shravasti.
