At that time, when the nurse was distributing the salt water dregs to those thieves, it was getting late, and the nuns' summer retreat house was closed. The nurse came and slowly, gently knocked on the door. The nuns said, "Who is knocking?" The nurse said, "It is I, the nurse." "Why have you come so late? Sisters, rejoice! Rejoice! Have you realized the Arhatship? Or the fruit of non-returning? Or the fruit of once-returning? Or the fruit of stream-entry? Or have you built a monastery for the Sangha? Sisters!" "No!" "Then is it rice, yogurt, soup, or the donation of large pieces of cloth?" The nurse said, "Sisters, do you have nothing else to do besides seeking rice, yogurt, soup, and the donation of large pieces of cloth?" "Then what else have you done?" "Have you seen those sixty thieves whose hands and feet were cut off?" "We have seen them." "I begged for salt water dregs and let them drink it, and after they drank it, because the time was ripe, I let them drink the milk of young mothers." "You unfortunate one, you fill your stomach with things destined to fail, and then you want us to rejoice? I wonder if I have not committed a downfall that is a complete failure?" She felt remorse, and then told this matter to the monks. The monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Monks, that nun has both awareness and intention, so she has fallen." Therefore, a monk or nun should not give medicine with the intention of wanting the patient to die, but should give medicine with the intention of wanting the patient to recover. If a monk gives medicine with the intention of wanting the patient to die, he will commit a serious offense. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti.

They were residing in the Un Garden. When the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana ordained the seventeen young novices, including the attendants, into the fully ordained Sangha, if a task was assigned to one of the seventeen, they would all do it together. Later, at another time, there was an all-night Dharma listening event at the monastery, and they all did "Tron" together. The next day, whatever ceremony the Sangha held, they all did "Tron" together as well. The day after that, one of the seventeen was assigned as the Karmadāna (monastery supervisor), and that day they all decorated the monastery and sat down. Then, when the Karmadāna was doing "Tron," one of the seventeen thought: "I'll just sleep secretly; why can't the sixteen others do 'Tron'?" Likewise, each of them had the same thought, and then all the other sixteen went to sleep separately. Only that Karmadāna alone worked from the beginning of the night. When the night dawned, he collected the oil lamps, opened the doors, swept the monastery, plastered the floor, knew the time, laid out the mats, offered incense around the stupa, and then stood on top of the monastery and began to strike the ghaṇṭā (bell). Then, those sixteen were awakened by the sound of the ghaṇṭā, and came out of their respective rooms carrying their alms bowls. They saw that Karmadāna running back and forth alone, and they said to each other: "Venerable ones, this one is running back and forth alone; haven't any of us youngsters helped him?" One of them said: "I thought I would just sleep secretly; why can't the sixteen others do 'Tron'?" Others said the same, and they all said that. Then the sixteen said: "Venerable ones, since this one always goes first in all our immediate tasks, if we haven't helped him, then we youngsters have done wrong, and he will scold us. Let's ask for forgiveness immediately after eating."

Having eaten the tsampa, they began to ask for forgiveness. The young ones grabbed his two feet, while the elders embraced him from the neck, saying, "O long-lived one, please forgive us," but he remained completely silent. One who was very close to him made a "嘎嘎ཚིལ་", and he began to laugh, also saying, "Forgive me." They thought, "This is a good method," and others also made "嘎嘎ཚིལ་", and in this way, everyone made "嘎嘎ཚིལ་", and then he broke wind upwards, and the time had come. They began to weep and lament, and the monks asked, "Hey, you seventeen, why do you weep and lament?" They replied, "We were formerly seventeen, but now we are sixteen, and we have lost our pleasing companions in pure conduct, and a defeat has occurred." The monks said, "It is not good," and departed. The sixteen also all departed, their minds subdued and silent. Other monks saw this and began to discuss it, saying, "O long-lived ones, these seventeen are like a fire of straw, burning in an instant and dying in an instant, for a moment joyful and for a moment subdued and silent." They were consumed by the fire of sorrow, and although they partook, they remained silent without speaking. Then the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One spoke, saying: "Monks, there is no transgression for those monks, but a monk should not make "嘎嘎ཚིལ་", and if he does, it will be a grave offense." Vinaya-vibhaṅga, Volume Eleven. The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. Not far from Shravasti, there was a rocky mountain where a wealthy householder lived, with much wealth and great enjoyment. He was faithful, virtuous, and of good intention. He vowed to build a monastery for the Sangha, with a high stable, windows, window grilles, and decorated with railings, pleasing to the heart and eye.
