Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. This also happened once. The Buddha, the Blessed One, does not establish the basis of training for the disciples in the Vinaya. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was a merchant who took a wife from the same lineage. He played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure with her. After playing, rejoicing, and enjoying pleasure, she gave birth to a son. In accordance with the order of his birth, he was given a name that matched his lineage. He was raised and grew up to be a great man. In time, when the merchant's wife passed away, he took another wife. The merchant said to that wife, 'Good woman, because one born of another is able to do work, but one born of a different mind is not able, this child is your son, you should provide for him.' After some time, the second wife also became pregnant. She thought, 'I will also have a son, this child will become his rival, so I should not praise him.' So, she made the child eat bad food and wear bad clothes, and she also repeatedly beat him with fists and slaps. The child went to his father and said, 'Father, this stepmother gives me bad food and bad clothes, and she also repeatedly beats me with fists and slaps.' The merchant said, 'Child, in any case, from now on, you must prevent her from doing that.' The merchant said to his wife, 'Good woman, didn't I tell you from the beginning that one born of another is able to do work, but one born of a different mind is not able, this child is your son, you should provide for him? Why do you make him eat bad food and wear bad clothes, and why do you repeatedly beat him with fists and slaps?' The wife said, 'Prince, I am teaching him, because he is the son of a merchant. If he is not taught, then the world will surely scold you, the prince.'

The merchant said: 'You were not appointed to teach this, so from now on, do not let him eat bad food and wear bad clothes, and do not repeatedly beat him with fists and slaps.' Because that wife was highly valued by that merchant, that wife made the boy wear bad clothes and eat bad food most of the time, and also repeatedly beat him with fists and slaps. The boy thought: 'My father did not strictly restrain this wicked mother, therefore this wicked mother makes me eat bad food and wear bad clothes most of the time, and also repeatedly beats me with fists and slaps, I will go forth.' So, the boy said to his father: 'Father, even if you restrain this wicked mother of mine, she still makes me eat bad food and wear bad clothes most of the time, and also repeatedly beats me with fists and slaps, I will go forth.' He pleaded in this way repeatedly. That merchant loved that wife very much and protected her heart, therefore he was unable to strictly restrain her, so he said: 'Son, this householder's wife is fierce, stubborn, and violent, so go forth and you will still see me alive. Otherwise, there will be a place where you will be harmed.' The boy, having been permitted by his father, went to Jeta Grove, went to the monk, prostrated at his feet, and said: 'Venerable one, I wish to go forth.' That monk said: 'Good sir, it is good that you have generated the mind of enlightenment, enjoyments are changeable, so go forth.' That monk ordained the boy and gave him the full ordination, and said: 'Good sir, there are two tasks for a monk: meditation and reading. I am a meditator, which do you do, meditation or reading?' He said: 'Preceptor, reading.' 'Good son, you should read the three pitakas.' He thought: 'One must follow the root teacher, but here they do not let me read, I will go to another place.' So he went to another place. There he read the three pitakas.

Possessing the three pitakas and proclaiming the Dharma, he became courageous in knowledge and liberation. He thought: The Blessed One said that for monks, it is difficult to cherish parents, to nourish them, to raise them, to give them milk, and to show them the various Jambudvipas (ancient name of India). Could a son carry his father on one shoulder and his mother on the other for a hundred years? Or could this great earth be filled with jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, white orpiment, coral, silver, salisambhava, the essence of gems, lapis lazuli, rubies, right-spiraling conch shells, and in this way become the master of wealth, that would not be considered a son's repayment and closeness to his parents. If he could cause unbelieving parents to generate perfect faith, to rightly accept, tame, enter, and establish them; cause parents who break precepts to generate perfect precepts, cause miserly parents to generate perfect generosity, cause parents with wrong views to generate perfect wisdom, and cause them to rightly accept, tame, enter, and establish them, then that would be considered a son's repayment and closeness to his parents. Therefore, my father is an unbeliever, and I should go and teach him the Dharma. Thinking this, he took his alms bowl and Dharma robes and went to Shravasti (Śrāvastī). Eventually, after arriving in Shravasti, he entered Shravasti and went directly to Jetavana. Everywhere in Shravasti, the news spread that the son of a certain merchant had studied the three pitakas in a border region and had come to Jetavana. When the merchant heard this, he thought: My son has studied the three pitakas and has come to Jetavana from a border region, I should go and make him very happy. So the merchant went to Jetavana, and when he saw his son, he said: Son, although you have abandoned me and become a renunciate, it is good that you have become a monk and are very learned, and I am also very happy. Having said this, he sat down in front of his son. How did that monk cause that merchant to have faith?
