and had not seen anything. He thought to himself: If my hunting tools, traps and nets are useful, why haven't I caught a single prey today? What is the reason for this? So he began to patrol around the lake and saw human footprints. He followed the footprints and saw a Pratyekabuddha sitting in a peaceful posture. He thought: These renunciates with peaceful minds like to appear in places like this. If I don't kill this person, they will surely cut off my livelihood. In any case, I must kill him. So, with a heart devoid of compassion, abandoning the afterlife, he drew his poisoned arrow, pulling the bow into the shape of a bowstring, reaching his ear, and shot it at the vital point of the Pratyekabuddha. The great Pratyekabuddha thought: This hunter is burdened with afflictions. It would not be good to overly scold and degrade him. Instead, I should give him this (body) and liberate him from (evil deeds). So, like a swan spreading its wings, he ascended into the sky and began to perform miracles of burning, illuminating, raining, and emitting lightning. Because ordinary people are quick to believe in miracles, the hunter fell at the feet of the Pratyekabuddha like a tree being uprooted, and said: Venerable object of offering, please come down, please come down. Please save me, who am drowning in the swamp of afflictions. The Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for the hunter, descended from the sky. Then, the hunter removed the arrow, applied medicine to the wound, and said: Holy one, please bear with it. If you need to use gold to stitch the wound, I can do that too. The Pratyekabuddha thought: I have already obtained what I wanted to obtain through this body of pus and blood, so now I should enter the realm of nirvana without remainder. So, in front of the hunter, he ascended into the sky again, displayed various kinds of miracles, and entered the nirvana without remainder.

He passed completely into the state of complete nirvana in the realm beyond evil. Because the hunter was wealthy and prosperous, he piled up all kinds of fragrant wood and burned it, then extinguished the pyre with milk. He placed the bones in a golden vase and had a stupa built at the crossroads of the main road. He raised umbrellas, victory banners, and flags, and made offerings with incense, garlands, powders, and musical instruments. He prostrated on both knees and made this aspiration: 'May I not be transformed in accordance with the karma of harming such a worthy object of offering. By this root of virtue of making offerings, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, with a beautiful, pleasing, and lovely form. May I attain such qualities that please the teacher and do not displease the teacher, qualities that are far superior to this.' Monks, the hunter at that time was this relative. Due to the ripening of the karma of shooting the Pratyekabuddha in a vital spot with a poisoned arrow, he suffered in the great hell of Avīci for an eon. From the remainder of that karma, he was poisoned for five hundred lifetimes. Even now, having attained perfect enlightenment, he has passed completely into nirvana due to poisoning. Because of making offerings and making aspirations, he is now born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, with a beautiful, pleasing, and lovely form. Having renounced in my teachings and abandoned all afflictions, he has realized the state of an arhat. He has pleased me, the teacher who is far superior to hundreds of thousands of millions of Pratyekabuddhas, and has not displeased me. Monks, therefore, the ripening of purely black karma is purely black, and the ripening of purely white karma is purely white. The ripening of mixed karma is also mixed. Monks, therefore, having abandoned purely black and mixed karma, one should strive for purely white karma, and be virtuous.
