A, monks, there is no transgression for Maudgalyayana's son to show miracles with such an intention. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in the place of Kalandaka in the Light Garden of Rajagriha. Then, the venerable Pilindavatsa put on his lower garment in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robe, and entered Rajagriha for alms. Gradually, he went for alms and went to the residence of Maga. At that time, the nephews of the venerable Pilindavatsa were reading external treatises. The venerable Pilindavatsa saw his nephews reading external treatises. Having seen this, he said to Maga: What are the nephews reading? Venerable, they are external treatises. Nephew, external treatises are like iron nails, difficult to understand, and even if understood, they will not lead to certainty, nor will they lead to the exhaustion of defilements. The Buddha's teachings are good in the beginning, middle, and end, and lead to direct knowledge, complete enlightenment, and nirvana, why not read those? Venerable, who lets them read? I will let them read. Venerable, please do not be angry, let them read. Maga said to those children: Children, go to the venerable today, go to the Light Garden to hear the Buddha's teachings. Those children, dressed in gorgeous clothes every day, surrounded by servants, went to the Light Garden and began to read the Buddha's teachings from the venerable Pilindavatsa. In Rajagriha, the practice of thieves called "Left of the Small Autumn Moon" is that as soon as they are released, knowledgeable people will discuss with each other: What kind of deeds should we do so that we can enjoy a whole year without effort and live comfortably? For those people, the nephews of the venerable Pilindavatsa, dressed in all kinds of gorgeous clothes every day, surrounded by servants, went to the Light Garden and read the Buddha's teachings from the venerable Pilindavatsa, (the thieves) would lie in ambush in the middle of the road, and if they caught those people, the venerable Pilindavatsa would let the children stay at home.

He thought: "The Brahmin also knows that I live near the venerable Pilindavatsa. If we can steal the children, we will have food to live on; if not, we will steal their jewelry. This way we can enjoy ourselves for a year without having to work." They signaled each other and lay in ambush by the road. When the children came along covered in all kinds of jewelry, the robbers put them in a boat and carried them away. The servants who were following the children saw that the children had been stolen by the robbers, and they ran to the residence of Pilindavatsa's son, crying out: "Master, your sons have been stolen by evil men, please think of a way!" The Brahmin also ran to King Bimbisara, who was born in Magadha, and said: "Deity, my children have been stolen by evil men, please help me get my children back." King Bimbisara ordered the young King Ajatasatru: "Go quickly and bring back the Brahmin's children and the robbers!" Ajatasatru did not leave immediately because he had been close to that Brahmin for a long time. Those who had great faith in the venerable Pilindavatsa said to the venerable Pilindavatsa: "Venerable one, please know that your grandsons have been stolen by evil men, please try to save them!" Pilindavatsa thought: "If I do not care about the children, the children will suffer because of being separated from their parents, and the parents will also suffer because of being separated from their children, and the unbelievers will also find an excuse, and the believers will say: 'These evil men have stolen everything, who will go to the Bright Garden in the future?' This will become different, I should display miraculous powers." Thinking this,

The son of Pilinda went by means of magical power and sat near the boat, and the boat remained motionless. The robbers thought, "Why is this boat not moving?" And they saw the venerable son of Pilinda sitting near the boat. Having seen him, they said to the venerable son of Pilinda, "Holy one, why are you so arrogant? Do we, who are subject to old age, make you arrogant? If I had not realized such a collection of virtues, would you not have stolen my nephews today? Holy one, please release them! Today!" The venerable son of Pilinda withdrew those manifestations of magical power and said to the boys, "Boys, today your parents will be uneasy, go back today!" Those boys went home. Prince Ajatashatru also came from the royal palace with a fourfold army, a host of elephants, a host of horses, a host of chariots, and a host of infantry. Ajatashatru saw those boys and said, "Boys, where are you going?" They said, "As we were going to the Light Garden, we were stolen by the thieves of the small autumn month." "Then who rescued you?" "The venerable son of Pilinda." Ajatashatru was delighted and rejoiced, saying, "In our country, there is such a holy one with such great magical power, such great strength, who protects the interests of this life and the next, we have indeed obtained a good gain!" He praised him and as he entered the royal palace, the group of six also came out, and the group of six said, "Whom are you praising?" Ajatashatru said, "You!" "What have we done?" "The venerable son of Pilinda rescued the sons of the Brahmins who had been robbed by the thieves of the small autumn month." "Miserly ones, we are like that, yet here some people have great faith in the naked ascetics. If the naked ascetics were to see, they would also show the way."
