They consulted each other. The sons of Anathapindika, the householder, each day, adorned with all sorts of ornaments and surrounded by the boys they sent as messengers, would go to Jeta Grove and listen to the Buddha's teachings from the great venerable Maudgalyayana. (The robbers) would sit in the middle of the road. (The robbers thought) If we seize them, the great venerable Maudgalyayana will think the children are staying at home, and Anathapindika will think the children are staying with the great venerable Maudgalyayana. If we can steal the children, we will have a way to make a living. If we can't, we will steal the ornaments, so that we don't have to work and can comfortably enjoy them for a year. They had such thoughts. They made an agreement, dug holes in the middle of the road and hid. The children, adorned with all sorts of ornaments, came, and the robbers took the children away. The boys who were sent as messengers following the children saw that the children had been stolen by the robbers. They ran to Anathapindika and reported: Master, your sons have been stolen by the thieves, please find a way! Anathapindika ran to King Prasenajit of Kosala and said: Your Majesty, my children have been stolen by the thieves, please ask for the children back. King Prasenajit ordered the young prince Jetakumara: Go and quickly bring back the children of the householder and the robbers! Jetakumara, because he had been close to Anathapindika's family for a long time, went immediately. Then, those who had great faith in the venerable great Maudgalyayana said to the venerable great Maudgalyayana: Venerable, please know that your close ones have been stolen by the thieves, please make an effort! The venerable great Maudgalyayana thought, if I don't care about the children, for the time being, the children will be separated from their parents and...

They will experience suffering, and the parents will also experience the suffering arising from separation from their children. Unbelievers will also find opportunities, and believers will also be like this. If all these children are stolen by the lunar thieves, who will go to the Jeta Grove in the future? He thought, the situation will become completely different, I should display my magical powers. Having thought and realized this, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, through his magical power, manifested the army of the noble-born. He beat the taha drums in the four directions. The lunar thieves, knowing this, thought, if the wise ones are surrounded by our general, the noble-born, from the four directions, it will not be good to run away, so they abandoned the children and fled. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana also withdrew the manifested magical power and sat down near the road in the forest of trees. The children came, and the noble Mahāmaudgalyāyana said: Children, where are you going? Venerable, we were stolen by the lunar thieves. Then who saved you? It was the general, the noble-born. Children, today your parents will be unhappy, go back today. After the children returned home, the general, the noble-born, also led the four-part army of elephants, cavalry, chariots, and infantry, fully equipped, from Shravasti. The noble-born saw the children and said: Children, where are you going? They said: We were going to the Jeta Grove, but we were stolen by the lunar thieves. Then who saved you? It was the general, the noble-born. The noble-born thought, I am walking now, how did I save them? Venerable, surely someone with great magical power saved them. Having thought and realized this, he said: Children, whom did you see in that direction? The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana. The noble-born saved them.

Of the earth. Thinking who else could do this, and understanding, they rejoiced and rejoiced. (They thought) In our land, there lives such a noble one with great miraculous powers and great strength, who can protect us in this life and the next. We have truly obtained a great benefit! They praised him again and again. When the praise reached Shravasti, the group of six monks also came out. The group of six monks said: Who are you praising? The noble one said: Praising you. What have we done? The great venerable Maudgalyayana liberated the sons of the householder Anathapindika from the heretics of the small star month (November in the Tibetan calendar). O poor ones, even though we are like this, there are some here who have great faith in the naked ascetics. If the naked ascetics are seen, they will also show the way. They sat there without saying a word. The group of six monks said: Let Lakshi and Near Lakshi know these things. Do you live in a pit and build a nest because of a minor offense? The group of six monks entered the monastery, did the work of food, and after the elders prostrated, they went to the place where the great venerable Maudgalyayana was, and said to the great venerable Maudgalyayana: Venerable, I prostrate! Venerable ones, please be patient. Venerable, please grant permission, grant permission for the five types of offenses. Venerable, did you liberate the sons of the householder Anathapindika from the heretics of the small star month (November in the Tibetan calendar)? Yes, it has been liberated. Venerable, we hope that you will experience the bliss of meditation, liberation, samadhi, and equanimity. Please do not only have compassion for us attendants, but not have compassion for the heretics of the small star month (November in the Tibetan calendar). Please restore the offense of liberating wealth from others according to the Dharma. I have not seen the offense. Venerable ones, because the Blessed One has not seen the cause of the offense.
